A stunning and rich Japanese six-panel folding screen, byobu, Edo Period, early 19th century. Painted in deep, vibrant colors, using mineral pigments, the scene depicts autumn flowers and foliage. A pair of quail huddle under a Japanese maple with fiery red leaves, and a pair of songbirds in its branches. Nearby, a stream flows. Various flowers, including narcissus, chrysanthemum, roses, lily, and morning glory. Lush clouds rendered in gold leaf flow through the gold flecked landscape.
