About the Item

Each stroke of the brush is a gesture in space Title: Love unified in Freedom. 1961 den Hague period. From private family collection During the late 1950s Zero, a Dutch Avant Garde collaboration of artists from Germany, Italy, Japan and The Netherlands formed a dedicated group driven by a sense of boundless optimism for a new social order and culture based in peace, love and freedom that accepted reality. Born from a newly integrated philosophical concept of truth from the traditions of both the east, especially Zen and in the west, Decartes and Francis Bacon amongst many others, these individuals believed in exploring thought creating reality through the medium ship of painting thus bringing into being a whole new artistic movement. After the atrocities of human suffering experienced through two world wars these new European artists picked up the threads of the *Spiritual in Art* movement which had started in 1890 where painting light and sound was explored as an expression of freedom by Paul Klee and Kandinsky and Mondriaan to name a few. Now in the 1950s and 1960s abstraction as an art form was being initiated by such individuals as Gerard Verdijk. These new Europeans were the largest artist network in history to change notions of art forever. Inspired by this new Aura of artistic interpretation , Gerard produced this work which is now for sale for the first time. “For me figuration and abstraction are one. Essentially the painting and the title are united, one. The title connects with the image and vice versa. Nowhere does this point to a literary complexity of the two, but to what is present. Reality is created by the mind what is real and what is illusion” G.V. G.Verdijk later on formed his own movement; Motion in relation to Spatial effect is the essence of his work.
