"Egrets Amongst Lotuses" Japanese Paper Byobu Screen, c. 1920

About the Item

Everything about "Egrets Amongst Lotuses" is timeless and delicate, particularly the fine paper, soft colors, and detailed brushstrokes. The painting is signed Kyokata and dates to the Taisho Period, but style of painting is reminiscent of the 17th century Rinpa School, a prominent school of Japanese painting. The term byobu means “wind wall” and as the name suggests, painted folding screens were originally used in Japanese homes to block drafts of air. Washi paper, rice glue, silk brocade, watercolor pigments.

This exquisite hanging scroll demonstrates the preference for soft layering of gray tones with judicious use of color. The landscape is rendered in soft ink washes that subtly distinguish between water, mountain, and sky. The scroll painting...
