Japanese Bronze Vase, Meiji Period, circa 1880

About the Item

Baluster-shaped Japanese bronze vase decorated with sculpted birds on branches in relief. The vase's cover is embellished with foliage, and topped with a Foo dog. Mark under the base. Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912), circa 1880 Dimensions: W 9,4 in, D 9,4in, H 22in. Dimensions: L 24cm, P 24cm, H 56cm. The Meiji era was a period in Japanese history that lasted from 1868-1912. Initiated by the Meiji Restoration, the period falls between the Kejo Era (at the end of the Edo period), and the Taisho Era. This period marked the end of voluntary political isolation and the beginning of the Japan's modernization policies. During the Meiji period, which means enlightened government, Japan opened definitively to the West and was profoundly reformed. Under the leadership of the young Emperor Mutsuhito, the country--prior to which had been an isolated feudal state--became a modern, Industrial power. Its commerce with Europe and the United States flourished. The Meiji period also marked a revolution in Japanese decorative arts. Ceramics, enamels, bronzes, lacquers, and textiles were exported in large volumes. A man of letters and a visionary, the Emperor understood that the traditional savoir-faire of artisans was an asset in the international marketplace. From the outset of his reign, he sent numerous artists to study in Paris and invited their European counterparts to teach in Japan. To encourage renewed production and the adoption of Westernized styles and forms, the Emperor himself acquired numerous contemporary pieces from Europe. At the end of the Edo period (1600-1868), the production of bronze objects for personal use expanded: flower vases and animal forms, writing tools such as brush holders, water burets to dilute ink, and small sculptures or decorative objects destined to decorate home interiors. These objects were used as models for an artisanal force focused on exportation to Europe and the Americas at the beginning of the Meiji Era.
