Chinese Qing Dynasty Archaistic Bronze Parcel-Gilt Hu Vase, Mid-18th Century

About

A heavy and well cast Chinese mid-Qing dynasty bronze archaistic parcel gilt hu shaped vase, circa 1750. The vase of archaic "hu" vessel form, with a bulbous body set upon a high splayed foot, and topped with a tall neck and slightly everted mouth. Cast in the archaistic fashion, with large bands of taotie (ogre) masks cast on the neck and shoulders, and confronting beasts in the lapettes on the body, as well as the band of design around the foot. The designs all with dense leiwen grounds. The features of the taotie and beasts highlighted with heavy and gilding, accentuating the facial features, such as eyes, noses, horns and whiskers.
