Cairoware Brass, Silver and Copper Inlaid Coffee Set

About the Item

Cairoware brass, silver and copper inlaid coffee set, Egypt, early 20th century. The brass tray is inlaid in silver and copper, with four alternating cartouches of Islamic script and endless knot. The rim has a braided endless knot pattern. The set includes six "Gawa" or coffee cups (Zarfs), sugar bowl, and the classically shaped tin-lined 6" "Ibrik" or coffee server with collapsible handle, similarly decorated with cartouches of Islamic script. The brass tray measures 12 1/4"-inches in diameter, coffee server measures 6"-inches high, sugar bowl is 3"-inches in diameter x 1 7/8"-inches high and the coffee cups are 2 1/4"-inches in diameter x 1 7/8"-inches high.

    Large Asian Burmese brass ceremonial bowl with silver and copper inlaid with the ten Hindu Avatars of Vishnu. Fine example of Tanjore work, this brass bowl that has been overlaid with alternating copper and silver chased plaques, with high quality in detail executed in mixed metal repoussé with contrasting patination, showing Hindu deities. The base is engraved with a lotus flower motif. (This type of work is known as Tanjore work, after the south Indian city where much of this work was executed.) The depictions on the main plaques are believed to relate to those seen carved in relief on rock on the façade off the Great Temple (Brihadisvara) in Tanjore.
