18th Century Japanese Altar Table

About the Item

This lacquered 18th century Edo period altar table was probably made for the private shrine of an aristocratic home. There, it would have been placed before an image of a deity, and ritual objects — an incense burner, candle stands, and offerings of fresh flowers — would have been placed on it. Our table was lacquered black and then “Chinese red.” Over time and with use, the surface was worn down randomly, revealing the layers underneath. This mottled effect was so prized that the process was sometimes rushed by rubbing, reflecting an appreciation of age and use that is intrinsically Asian.
