Louis XVI Transitional Two-Drawer Commode with a Breche Marble Top

About the Item

A period 18th century French two drawer chest with a breche marble top, the oak carcass veneered in various exotic woods in an overall geometric design. The large inlaid oval panel to the front shows various musical instruments in a heraldic fashion. The cabinet is stamped JME for (jurande des menuisiers-ébénistes) From 1743 onward, it became the rule in France to stamp every piece of furniture that was offered for sale with the maker’s name. An additional stamp, JME, would be added once a committee, made up of elected guild members who inspected the workshops four times a year, had approved the quality. Any furniture that failed to meet the required standards of craftsmanship was confiscated.
