Large Chinese Carved Wood Robe Rack

About the Item

A large garment or robe rack from Northern China, circa first half of the 20th century. Made of elm wood with pronounced black wood grains, the rack was traditional used to display large garment and robes, and often service as a screen as well. The rack is of a Classic form featuring carved phoenix-head finials at both ends, scroll pattern brackets on the corners and at the bottom connected to the feet supports. A centered wood panel showcases a lion playing with a ball, an auspicious symbol in China. The construction is completely of mortise and Tenon, a traditional joinery in Chinese woodworking.
