Japanese Mishima Ceramic Vase Meiji Period

$1,500

About

A Japanese long neck slender ceramic vase in the style of Mishima, circa 19th century, Meiji period. Mishima pottery was originally imported from three islands in Taiwan and then from Korea in the Edo period circa 15th-16th century for tea ware. They were cherished for their beautiful inlay and white slip decoration. It was derived from Buncheong ware in the Joseon Dynasty. Following the import, it was imitated and made locally in Japan and the name remained. The vase on offer has a delicate Classic form. Its surface was decorated with circular rows of white slip inlay depicting fish, plum flowers, chrysanthemum, swirl and geometrical patterns. The neck and shoulder was also carved with lines and the base was carved with bamboo leaves. It is stamped with signature Rakuun.
