  • Japanese Kutani-Ware Porcelain Vase by the Famous Tokuda Yasokichi III 三代徳田八十吉
    By Yasokichi Tokuda III
    Located in Amsterdam, NL
Exquisite Kutani-ware porcelain vase of bluster shape by the famous artist Tokuda Yasokichi III (Masahiko) (1933-2009). Its body decorated with his iconic ‘saiyu’ glaze in transcending shades of black, azure blue, lime green and aubergine purple. Its round body carried by a smaller cylindrical foot. Signed ‘Kutani Yasokichi’ in dark red by the artist at the bottom. Including original signed and sealed tomobako (storage box). Tokuda Yasokichi III (1933-2009), real name Masahiko, was born Ishikawa prefecture. He is a third-generation potter working in Kutani style, and one of the world’s most famous of Kutani potters. Although traditional Kutani motifs are not present in his current work, Kutani- style colours are his primary design element. Brilliant patterns of rich eggplant, green and yellow merge and separate into abstract designs executed in his signature ‘saiyu’ glaze technique. In 1986 Tokuda was named a Bearer of Important Intangible Cultural Assets (a "Living National Treasure") by Ishikawa Prefecture for his work in Kutani ware, like his grandfather before him in 1953. He succeeded to the name Yasokichi III in 1988. Yasokichi III’s works have been recognized widely and shown in numerous museums including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Sackler Gallery, and the Smithsonian Institute. His honors include the acceptance into the Issui-kai Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition (1958), and the receiving of multiple prizes such as the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Association Chairman’s Award (1977), the Grand Prize of the International Pottery and Porcelain Exhibition (1990), and the Purple Ribbon Medal...
