Japanese Kenzan Style Classically Shaped Vase with Floral Design

$1,200

About

This Japanese Kenzan style vase has a classical shape with four small round handles. It has a colourful floral design of flowers and grasses. These have been hand painted in blue, green, purple and orange, on a silver gilt background that has a beautiful aged patina as it has oxidised over time. Ogata Shinsei (1663-1743) took on the pseudonym Kenzan and developed several distinctive styles of ceramic ware that remain highly popular. This vase is in the same popular style, signed Kenzan at the base. Meiji period, late 19th century.
