A Japanese ceramic tea bowl known as chawan potted in the E-Oribe style (painted Oribe). Oribe is a Sub type of high-fired Mino wares produced in the Seto and Mino areas of Gifu Prefecture in Japan. Mino ware was originated in the late 16th century of Edo period as Japan's first high-fired white-glazed pottery on which iron-oxide brush markings were used for surface decoration, a departure from previous techniques of carving, incision or applique. This Oribe chawan features brushed iron decoration under the glaze, depicting grasses and hanging fruit perhaps pomegranate. It has an overall light brown glaze with green glaze dipping on the edges. Small kiln cracklings are present throughout the surface. This chawan was dated to the turn of the century, late Meiji period.
