Chinese Eel Skin Glazed Stick Neck Vase, Qing Dynasty, 18th Century, China

US$8,500

About

A sublime and sensuous Chinese porcelain stick neck vase, with a rare eel-skin glaze, Qing Dynasty, 18th century, China. The vase is heavily potted, with a short, recessed foot supporting a round body and long, stick neck. The interior of both the foot and neck glazed in a pale celadon. The exterior of the vase with a complex, gorgeous eel skin glaze of overall mottled yellowish green and olive, with a reddish brown showing underneath. Related to the more famous 'tea dust' glaze, but with more variation in texture and hue, eel-skin is so named because of its resemblance to the skin of an eel. It is one of the rarest glazes in Chinese monochromes. The recessed base bearing a collection sticker from Sydney L. Moss.
