Large Dong Son Culture Ritual Bronze Bell

About the Item

A large and finely cast ritual bronze bell from the Dong Son Culture (circa 1000 BC-200 AD). Of unusually large size, the thinness of the bronze speaks to the advanced techniques in bronze working the Dong Son were able to achieve. The oval shaped body rises almost straight up to a gently sloped shoulder, before flaring out to an everted mouth at the top. A repeating concentric "S" shaped pattern enclosed within a rectilinear grid fully covers the surface. This bell features an overall warm and rich green patina. The Dong Son culture was the first bronze age culture in South East Asia. From their base in Vietnam, their influence spread into southern China and as far as the Indonesian archipelago.
