Chinese Painted Pottery Caparisoned Horse, Northern Wei Dynasty '386-534'

US$22,000

About

A magnificent and rare painted pottery model of a caparisoned horse, Northern Wei Dynasty (386 to 534), 5th-6th century, China. The noble beast is portrayed standing foursquare upon a rectangular plinth, looking downwards, its long, thick neck gracefully arched. The horse is elegantly dressed in an elaborate bridle with a high plume upon its head. A braided and tasseled lead tied gracefully around its neck. The horse's broad chest is decorated with a series of large paisley shaped ornaments. Each ornament further decorated with a floral boss in high relief. A saddle with a dramatic, outward swooping blanket painted ochre red graces the horse's back. Red ochre has been used to depict the elaborately styled mane as well. TL tested by Ralf Kotala Laboratory, Germany.
