1950s A Dorn Model Rose Print Cotton Dress With Black Velvet Bow

About the Item

This charming 1950s cotton dress has a print of rose bunches in an assortment of pastel shades - pink, lilac, yellow, jade green and white, which lie in between beds of gold printed daisies on a black background. The dress has a boat neckline with six inch wide straps which are gathered at the front and widen as they move over the shoulder towards the back of the dress. The fabric across the breast is ruched using irregular pleating to complement the texture of the straps. The bodice features an attractive velvet sash which continues around the back of the dress, where it consolidates in a bow with a popper fixture at the centre reverse at the mid back. There is a central button stand on the reverse of the garment with black velvet covered buttons. The bodice and skirt below the sash detail are made up of carefully tailored panels of fabric and flare out into a generous mid calf length skirt. There are deep forwards facing pocket details on either side of the skirt level with the hip. In wonderful condition, this piece would fit roughly size US 8, UK size 12. Shown with a petticoat but equally could be worn without.

Gianni Versace was an influential Italian fashion designer who founded the Versace brand. In the fall of 1997, he presented his couture collection in Paris, which was widely acclaimed for its opulent fabrics, bold prints, and intricate detailing. The collection featured several notable pieces, such as a black evening gown with a plunging neckline and a gold-encrusted jacket. However, just a few days later, on July 15th, 1997, Gianni was tragically murdered outside his Miami Beach home. Despite his untimely death, his contributions to the world of fashion continue to be celebrated, and his legacy remains an inspiration too many. This collection is iconic as it’s the final collection before his passing. The collection very much showed a new direction for the house. Which was heading away from the bombshell curves and souped-up sex appeal that the house previously focussed on. But took more Inspirations to the new wave John Galliano and Mcqueen were leading.
