Space Age 1960's Pierre Cardin Mod A-Line Dress Featuring Cut Out Design

$3,50020% Off

Pierre Cardin has enjoyed a storied career in fashion design starting with his work for Schiaparelli and Christian Dior in the 1940's and continuing under his own label in the 1950's. His space age collections of the 1960's remain his greatest impact on fashion history. This amazing futuristic dress is as much an innovative statement today as it was when first introduced in the 1960's. The winter white wool blend fabric is cut into a classic a-line shift with a zipper and hook at the back and full lining. Three provocative cut outs are placed on one side of the dress for an avant garde 'peek-a-boo' effect. Wearing this piece sans undergarments makes quite a fashion statement but if your tastes run a little on the modest side then consider pairing it with a black bodysuit or something brighter with coordinating tights for a mod color pop. This is a true piece of fashion history and quite a collector's item. CONDITION At first glance, the dress appears to be pristine but when held in the right light, a discoloration becomes apparent just under the last cut out ... please see photograph 9. It is difficult to see in sunlight or direct light but it becomes noticeable in shaded light. This flaw seems minor considering the importance of the piece but it is worth mentioning and should be noted. I will be glad to provide additional photographs upon request. (Please note that the dark line shown through the last cut out is not a flaw but rather a seam in the mannequin torso.) SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The size is unmarked though it best fits a modern day size 4 and might also work for a size 2 with attention to the following measurements. The dress is fully lined. Bust 34" Waist 35.5" Hips 37" Shoulder Length Taken Across Back From Arm Opening to Opening 14.5" Length From Shoulder to Hem 33.75"

About Pierre Cardin (Designer)

Best known for creating groundbreaking fashion designs from the 1950s onward, Pierre Cardin has enjoyed great success in other design fields, most notably furniture. Cardin’s chairs, cabinets, tables and other pieces share many of the keynotes of his clothing designs. They are simple, geometric, elegant and cool.

Cardin was born in a village near Venice, Italy, and raised in central France. Always interested in fashion, he left home at age 17 to train with a Vichy tailor. After the end of World War II, Cardin moved to Paris and worked for a succession of couture houses, before taking a job with Christian Dior in 1946. Cardin went solo in 1950, and quickly won attention for his novel style. Unlike Dior’s famous New Look, Cardin’s clothes de-emphasized a woman’s curves; his breakthrough pieces like the Bubble dress had, instead, a sculptural quality. In the following decade, Cardin introduced bright tunic dresses and shifts, marketed as the Space Age look and accessorized with vinyl hats and visors.

In the 1970s Cardin expanded his design work into furniture, jewelry and automobiles. (Later, licensing agreements would put Cardin’s name on goods ranging from perfume to sunglasses.) Cardin’s furniture pieces — inspired, perhaps, by the rediscovery of Art Deco design in that decade — feature simple, symmetrical forms, lacquer and figured veneer finishes, and accents in metals such as aluminum and brass. Whether you are looking for a vintage cocktail dress or a chest of drawers to keep it in, as you will see from these pages, Pierre Cardin offers an option in either that is timelessly chic.
