Petersburg Press Paintings

About Petersburg Press
Petersburg Press is a publisher of limited edition prints and has worked with many of the most significant European and American Post War and Pop artists of their generation. Founded by Paul Cornwall-Jones in London in 1968 Petersburg Press opened additional studios and an exhibition facility in New York in 1972. Cornwall-Jones began working with artists while studying architecture at Cambridge University, where he founded his earlier business Editions Alecto in 1960. On moving to London in 1963 he engaged with a young generation of British artists including Richard Hamilton, Allen Jones, Eduardo Paolozzi, Howard Hodgkin and David Hockney. One of his first publications was Hockney’s “A Rake’s Progress”, a suite of 16 etchings, still one of the artist's most prized works. Cornwall-Jones interest rapidly encompassed the new generation of American artists such as Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist and Frank Stella. The core program has been collaborating with artists in, publishing limited edition prints and “livres d’artiste” (books including original etchings or lithographs), in the tradition of the illustrious French publisher Ambroise Vollard, a rare activity for a publisher in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. Petersburg Press has organized numerous exhibitions worldwide and published also a wide range of books and posters.
