Located in New Orleans, LA
John Steven Dews b.1949 British Cutty Sark Entering the River Thames Signed "J Steven Dews" (lower left) Oil on canvas John Steven Dews demonstrates his skill for capturing the splendor of the historic clipper ship in this oil on canvas. Entitled Cutty Sark Entering the River Thames, the work brings vividly to life the historic clipper ship Cutty Sark as it returns home after a long journey. The majesty and grace of the historic vessel are perfectly realized in the present work, enhanced by Dew's mastery over composition and attention to detail. With his tranquil palette of light blues, whites and yellows, the artist imbues his canvas with the same sense of serenity that is felt at the end of a long journey. Built in 1869, the Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship owned by the Jock Willis Shipping Line...

Christ as a Gardener by Edouard Manet
By Édouard Manet
Located in New Orleans, LA
Edouard Manet 1832-1883 French Christ as a Gardener Oil on canvas Beloved for his invaluable role in the development of the Impressionist movement, Edouard Manet's artworks are foundational to the canon of art history. The revolutionary artist's rare religious works, while lesser-known, are some of the most intimate paintings he ever produced, offering insight into the artist’s fascination with the idea of humanity’s beautiful and transcendent relationship with suffering. Begun in 1856, Christ as a Gardener is one of his earliest renderings of Christ and offers a view into nascent motifs that would later define Manet’s monumental legacy. In the painting, Christ’s profile is turned toward the viewer, though his face is turned to the bottom left of the frame and his downturned eyes avert the viewer's gaze. His brown robes contrast the warm light of his halo and the dramatic sky behind him. As with all of Manet’s work, this image is rich with symbolism. A partial self-portrait, as seen in the similar facial hair and iconic appearance of a paintbrush-like garden tool, the painting renders the biblical scene of Mary Magdalene mistaking the risen Christ for a gardener with personal intimacy. As the biblical tale relays, when Mary Magdalene recognizes Christ, she reaches out to him; he replies, “Touch me not.” The highly charged relationship between the Christ figure and the viewer, standing in as Mary Magdalene, is further emphasized by Christ’s hand that appears to reach out for contact. Through this extension of touch, Christ’s presence is tangible, reminiscent of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel. This intimate initiation of human connection directly contrasts Christ’s biblical words, “Touch me not.” Scholars have attributed this rejection, both in gaze and through words, to Manet’s conviction that Christ, as a human, embodied a spirit of renunciation and rejection of his earthly existence. Christ’s distant expression suggests a willingness to be elsewhere — an expression that Manet will later use in his most distinguished works of art. Manet would go on to expand his view of Christ as a timeless embodiment of absolute commitment and suffering with his monumental Salon paintings...

Henry Bowles Howard, 12th Earl Of Suffolk And 5th Earl Of Berkshire
Located in New Orleans, LA
Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723-1792 | British Sir Henry Bowles Howard, 12th Earl of Suffolk and 5th Earl of Berkshire Oil on canvas Sir Joshua Reynolds is unequivocally considered the most important English portraitist of the 18th century who was instrumental in adapting the Grand Manner style in the portrait genre. In fact, when the Royal Academy was founded in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first President, setting the precedent of quality for which all other portraitists would strive. Reynolds's portrait of Henry Bowles Howard, 12th Earl of Suffolk, showcases his genius in the genre and mastery over the medium. Reynolds’s portrait of the Earl expertly invokes classical values with strong lighting, rich colors and expert attention to detail to help underscore the prominence and revered echelon of the sitter. Howard was an esteemed British politician and Knight of the Garter. He served as Secretary of State for the Northern Department from 1771 to 1779, and he played a key role in utilizing mercenaries during the American Revolution and safeguarding Sweden's independence. The portrait employs Reynolds's signature style to render Howard rightfully as a gentleman of distinction. Captured seated in a stately library, the Earl appears learned and austere as he places one hand upon a stack of important documents and looks wistfully into the distance. Reynolds makes these compositional choices decisively, as the seated position gives Howard a weighty appearance of importance and the semi-profile turn captures his countenance at an attractive angle that highlights his strong, masculine features. The work draws on the classical conventions of Greek and Roman art and the Italian Renaissance masters, anchoring the nobleman in a history of refinement. Everything from his strong yet welcoming expression to his pale face enlivened by a rush of blood to the cheeks presents the picture of a strong, vital and powerful leader. As the first president of the Royal Academy in London, Reynolds’s commissions raised the status of an artist in Britain during the Romantic period and also established the portrait as an esteemed high art genre that garnered equal import to the history paintings that reigned supreme in decades prior. Today, Reynolds’s works grace the walls of the most important museums in the world, including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery in London, among others. Portrait Of Horatio Nelson Attributed To Lemuel Abbott
Located in New Orleans, LA
Attributed to Lemuel Abbott 1760-1803 | English Portrait of Horatio Nelson Oil on canvas This previously unknown portrait is an important discovery in British Naval history. In Admiral Lord Nelson's illustrious and well-studied life, there existed a "silent period" spanning 16 years during which no known portraits of Nelson existed. The discovery of this 1790 portrait, rendered just before his reentry into the Navy, is a significant development for Nelson scholars, adding new insight into the leader's life prior to his legendary command as Admiral of the British Navy. Almost certainly painted by Lemuel Abbott, the official portraitist of Admiral Nelson, the rendering depicts the naval titan in casual dress. This is one of the two final depictions of Nelson before he acquired the war-inflicted injuries that marked his later years. In 1790, Britain was at peace, and Lord Nelson found himself residing in Burnham Thorpe with his newlywed wife, Frances. Having served with great distinction in South America and the West Indies, he garnered much local acclaim. Yet, the uncertainty of returning to the sea weighed heavily on his mind. At the age of thirty, he lived the life of a country gentleman managing his estate. Only one other much smaller portrait of Nelson in civilian attire exists, a much smaller rendering from 1800 currently held at the National Portrait Gallery. Compelling and atmospheric, the oil on canvas offers viewers a rare glimpse into the visage of a youthful and resolute Nelson, a man driven by an unwavering desire to forge his reputation in the art of naval warfare. This portrait had long been believed by the Nelson family to portray Edmund Nelson, Horatio Nelson's father. When connoisseur Jeremy Knight acquired this treasure directly from the Nelson family, he postulated that the work actually depicted the famed Admiral and not his father, as it was painted around 1790, and the elder Edmund Nelson would have been 68 years old at that time. Knight then hired the renowned Nelson scholar Martin Downer, the former Sotheby's expert and author of the bestselling books Nelson's Purse and Nelson's Lost Jewel, to confirm his hunch. It has now been confirmed by Martin Downer that this portrait is the missing...

A particularly fine piece from the statesman’s oeuvre, this masterpiece entitled Coast Scene near Lympne is rendered in fluid brushstrokes and a vivid array of hues. Churchill often leveraged his elite connections to navigate the complex political landscape of the 1920s and 1930s. Tonnelle Nord-Ouest Au Parc De Marquayrol (La Pergola) By Henri Martin
By Henri Martin
Located in New Orleans, LA
Henri Martin French 1860-1943 Tonnelle nord-ouest au Parc de Marquayrol (La Pergola) Signed “Henri Martin” (lower right) Oil on canvas A dazzling display of color and texture, Henri Martin's Tonnelle nord-ouest au Parc de Marquayrol (La Pergola) celebrates the natural beauty of the artist’s sprawling 17th-century estate perched upon a hill overlooking the village of Labastine-du-Vert. The famed Post-Impressionist painter created many impressive works during his illustrious career, but the paintings of his beloved garden at Maquayrol remain among the most cherished by museums and collectors, and this example is among the finest of these compositions. An Italianate garden lied at the heart of Marquayrol, complete with cypress-lined paths and a circular pool adorned with geraniums. Painted in 1925, Tonnelle nord-ouest au Parc de Marquayrol (La Pergola) takes the viewer behind the walls of Martin’s garden, revealing its pièce de résistance: a stately yet romantic pergola strewn with flowering foliage. A towel lies beneath the luxuriant umbrella of blooms and Martin paints a still-life tableau of a water pitcher, glass and bowl of fruit amidst the dense thickets of plants, juxtaposing peaceful accoutrements of domestic life with the powerful beauty of untamed nature. Even so, elements of the garden remain elegantly manicured. A warm sill along the top of the bench provides space for a myriad of potted plants to flower in the sunlight. Even the central pergola itself, which so reverently showcases the sheer strength of nature with its profusion of blooms, still carries the touch of the gardener who trains each branch and leaf to fall in the most graceful and beautiful way. Henri Martin began his artistic studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. In 1879, he moved to Paris to study under Jean Paul Laurens, and his early academic style earned him a medal from the conservative Paris Salon at the age of 23. Shortly after, Martin was awarded a trip to Italy, which profoundly affected his artistic development. While studying the works of the Italian masters Giotto and Masaccio, Martin acquired a new perspective on light, leading him to abandon his classical training and fall under the influence of the not-so-academic Impressionists. Utilizing and experimenting with various impressionistic techniques, Martin created important and well-received Divisionist, Symbolist and Pointillist paintings. His work was so admired that it earned him the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900. Martin remained an independent artist, refusing numerous contracts from successful Paris dealers...
