Resurrection
By Henry Botkin
Located in Boston, MA
Signed lower left: "Botkin". Henry Botkin (1896-1983) was a mid-century American modernist equally known as a painter, a collage artist, and for his work as a proponent of abstract art. Botkin’s oeuvre can be defined by three distinct styles—School of Paris Modernism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. While each of the three styles is considered distinct, music can be seen as the common thread throughout his artistic output. In the 1930s, the impact of Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” is readily apparent in works such as Woman in Boat...

Boit Girls in Gold
By Thomas Darsney
Located in Boston, MA
Signed verso. As Darsney’s work has developed, his compositions and influences have evolved. An auto-didactic artist, Darsney draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including The Boston School and iconic masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt and Degas. These artists’ attention to detail and adherence to classical ratio, coupled with Darsney’s own innate sense of structural integrity, inform his vision. He is also particularly influenced by the art on view in Boston museums and collections as seen here with his portrayal of The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit...

Newbury Street, Boston [Louis Boston / Bonwit Teller Building]
Located in Boston, MA
This watercolor by Charles Demetropoulos depicts a classical French Academic-style building which was designed in 1862 by architect William G. Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. In the 1860’s, many of Boston’s cultural institutions relocated here to the Back Bay, the elegant residential district being built on the tidal marshes behind the city. When the museum moved here in 1863, the new building dominated the western edge of the landfill. The classical design reflected its role as a “temple of learning.” The building was later renovated into a women’s retail store known as Bonwit Teller and later became home to Louis Boston...
