The watercolor is presented and supplied in a sympathetic pinned corner frame dating from the 1950s or 1960s (which is shown in these photographs), mounted and behind glass. This antique painting is in very good condition whilst the frame is in a good condition, commensurate with age. It is ready to hang and display. The watercolor is signed by both artists and dated 1872 lower left. The mount is titled and attributed by hand. Cornelius Pearson was an accomplished landscape artist. He was born in Boston, Lincolnshire but moved at an early age to London where he became apprenticed to a copper-plate engraver. He soon abandoned engraving however to devote himself to being a watercolor painter. Although he lived in London throughout his career, he travelled for his work to paint in Kent, Ireland, Wales, the Lake District, Scotland, on the Thames and Devon. He then served with the Air Ministry Design Service, during which time he attended Regent Street Polytechnic in London from 1949-51, before completing his studies at the London College of Printing. His tutors included Henry Trevick, Raymond Sheppard, and Christopher Saunders. From 1953 to 1962 Maddox worked as an art director for advertising agencies in London. He then worked as a freelance artist illustrator and graphic designer. Between 1972 and 1989 Maddox worked extensively for the Post Office and the Royal Mail, and the Isle of Man postal authority. He designed stamps, stamp book covers, first day presentation packs, posters and charts. His stamps typically feature British architecture, rural life and the countryside. He also produced posters for British Rail and painted pictures that were used as carriage panel prints, and illustrated several books. Maddox’s talents were well recognised and respected in the professional art and design communities. He was elected a member of the Society of Industrial Artists & Designers in 1956 and of the Royal Institute in 1959, in 1989 becoming its president. Frank Egginton was a British contemporary landscape artist, synonymous with watercolours of the Irish countryside, particularly county Donegal. He came from an artistic family, with his father being the well-known artist Wycliffe Egginton (1875-1951), and his nephew was the artist Robert Egginton. His daughter and son in law have run The Gallery in Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal for many years. Frank (officially Francis John) Egginton was born in Wallasey in the county of Cheshire on 10 November 1908. When he was a baby the family moved to Newton Abbott in Devon, as his father had been appointed headmaster of the College of Art there. Frank was educated at Newton College, and then Newton Abbott College of Art, and Exeter School of Art. He then spent some time perfecting his drawing whilst working in an architect’s office. Lionel Horsnell was an English artist, born in Hertford in 1932. He studied art at the Harrogate School of Art and Leeds University. He specialised in watercolour paintings of the Home Counties and the south coast and exhibited in several galleries. He has been described as a Bohemian, and from the 1960s to the 1980s he liked to frequent Soho, where he drank in the Coach and Horses in Old Compton Street. He liked to travel by bicycle and often cycled around the countryside, exchanging paintings for bed and board. He died on 28 November 2011. Courtyard Arts, where he painted and socialised for many years was something of a ‘second home’ for him and held a retrospective exhibition of his works in 2012. Dame Elisabeth Frink was one of Britain’s most important post-war sculptors, an accomplished draughtsman, illustrator and teacher. She was part of the post-war school of expressionist British sculptors dubbed the Geometry of Fear, and enjoyed a highly acclaimed career that was commercially successful, broke boundaries and contributed greatly to bringing wonderful sculpture to public places. She was born on 14 November 1930 in Thurlow, the daughter of a cavalry officer, and brought up in rural Suffolk near to an active airbase. She was brought up a Catholic and educated at the Convent of the Holy Family, Exmouth. She then studied at the Guildford School of Art from 1947-1949 under Willi Soukop and Henry Moore’s assistant, Bernard Meadows, and then at the Chelsea School in London 1949-1953. She taught at Chelsea School of Art 1951-61, St. Martin’s School of Art 1954-62 and was a visiting instructor at the Royal College of Art 1965-1967, after which she lived in France until 1973. Frink first came to the attention of the public in 1951 at an exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery, London. In 1952 she represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, being described by Herbert Read as “the most vital, the most brilliant and the most promising of the whole Biennale”. The same year the Tate bought its first work by her, and she began to enjoy commercial success. Thereafter she exhibited regularly and was for 27 years associated with Waddington’s, London. The subjects which Frink was most concerned with were man, dog and horses, with and without riders. Interestingly she seldom sculpted the female form, drawing on archetypes of masculine strength, struggle and aggression. Her work has the recurring themes of the vulnerable and the predatory, in the spirit of an authentic post-war artist. It has been said that she was more concerned with representing mankind that portraits of individuals. The appeal of her work lies in its directness, provoking a frank statement of feeling. The anatomy is often exaggerated or incorrect; the impact growing more out of her interest in the spirit of the subject. Her animals and birds may be drawn from nature but verge on the abstract, conveying raw emotion and character rather than a realistic depiction. Her unique style is characterised by a rough treatment of the surface which embeds each piece with vitality and her personal impression. In her later work even the distinction between human and bird figures becomes blurred. Commentators have noted that the often rugged, brutal and contorted surfaces of her work reflect the destruction and terror of the six-year world-wide conflict that she witnessed as a child. Frink was an active supporter of Amnesty International. In the 1960s and early 1970s Frink produced a notable series of falling figures and winged men. Later, living in France during the Algerian war, she began making heads, blinded by goggles which had a threatening facelessness. Frink produced many notable public commissions, including Wild Boar for Harlow New Town, Blind Beggar and Dog for Bethnal Green, Noble Horse and Rider for Piccadilly, London, a lectern for Coventry Cathedral, Shepherd for Paternoster Square beside St. Paul’s Cathedral and a Walking Madonna for Salisbury Cathedral. In the early 1980s she produced a set of three larger than life figures The Dorset Martyrs which stand on the edge of the old walled town of Dorchester on the site of the old gallows, as a memorial to those who had been executed there ‘for conscience sake’. Frink’s Canterbury Tales was a collection of 19 etchings drawn directly on to copper plates and etched by her. The ‘book’ was issued in three limited editions. Her illustrations have been praised as “amongst the most successful illustrations of the century, encompassing the mood of the text in concise delineations and disarmingly ribald humour”. She illustrated other books with colored lithographs or drawings. Frink was on the Board of Trustees, British Museum from 1976, and was a member of the Royal Fine Art Commission 1976-81. CBR (1969), DBE ((1982), Associate of the Royal Academy (1971), Royal Academy (1977). She was made a Companion of Honour in 1992. She died on 18 April 1993, but not before completing her last commission, a monumental but unusual figure of Christ for the front of the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool, unveiled a week before her death. For several decades Frink exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. In her later years she lived and worked in Dorset where her home and garden became an arena for her work. In 1985 she had a retrospective at the Royal Academy. She died on 18 April 1993, but not before completing her last commission, a monumental but unusual figure of Christ for the front of the Anglican Cathedral in Liverpool, unveiled a week before her death. There was a memorial show at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Bretton Hall in 1994. Today Frink is venerated as one of the great twentieth century British sculptors. A unique and very special painting, this charming delicate watercolour was painted by Princess Alice Mary Maud, of the House of Hanover, the second daughter of Queen Victoria. This is very significant because the artist is now the great- great grandmother of the current monarch, HM King Charles III. The artist herself was an extraordinary woman, the painting was created at a special time and place, and the subject of the painting is a mystery. The painting depicts a winged angel looking down at a small baby lying in a cradle. The angel holds a scroll, emblazoned with “Long life and happiness” A date, “June 8th, 1860”, is written clearly and prominently above the child, signifying a date of birth. The painting is signed simply “Alice” and the date of its completion is recorded as “June 11th, 1860.” The painting demonstrates that the young Princess, just 17 at the time, was an accomplished and sensitive artist. The work commemorates the birth 3 days earlier of a baby whose arrival must have been personally celebrated by the Princess. The identity of this child is a mystery. The fact that the cradle is decorated with blue ribbons and trimmings does not necessarily suggest that this is a male child as the custom of blue for a boy had not yet been adopted at this time. Princess Alice of the United Kingdom became Princess Louis and Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine by marriage. She was born on 25th April 1843 and was the third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Like her siblings she spent her early childhood in the company of her parents and siblings, travelling between the British royal residences. Her birth prompted her parents to purchase Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight, and for Alice this was very much her family home. Here, at her father’s insistence, she and her siblings learnt family values and practical skills such as housekeeping, cooking, gardening and carpentry. During the Crimean War Alice, aged just eleven, toured London hospitals with her mother and elder sister. This triggered her interest in health and public welfare which continued all her life. Alice was considered the most emotionally sensitive of her siblings and was genuinely sympathetic to the burdens of others. Her compassion meant that she took on the role of the family caregiver. She nursed her grandmother, Victoria, Duchess of Kent, mother to Queen Victoria, throughout her final illness, and provided emotional support for all the family after her death. As Alice reached adulthood Queen Victoria made plans for her to be married. Queen Victoria wanted her children to marry for love, but the choice of suitors was nevertheless severely restricted by protocol. After Alice rejected the first two potential suitors her mother and elder sister suggested Prince Louis of Hesse, a minor German royal who was heir to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. He and his brother were invited to Windsor Castle in 1860, ostensibly so that they could watch the Ascot Races in the company of the royal family. In reality, the visit was an opportunity for the Queen to inspect her potential son-in-law. Louis and Alice got on together well, and Alice made it clear that she was attracted to him. Noel Laura Nisbet was an English oil and watercolor artist, who painted figures, landscape, fantasy and romantic scenes. She created some wonderful original Pre-Raphaelite-influenced works which are now much sought-after. She was the youngest daughter of Hume Nisbet, a Scottish artist, author and traveller, whose support and generosity enabled her talent to flourish. The family moved from Scotland to London in 1887 and Noel was born in Harrow on 30 December that year. Noel attended the Notre Dame Convent school in Clapham, then studied art at South Kensington, under L.C. Nightingale, where she won three gold medals and the Princess of Wales Scholarship (established on 1863 to reward the most distinguished female art student in the UK and what is now the Republic of Ireland). Noel’s elder sister Margaret also became an artist. In 1910 Noel married Harry Bush, who she had met as a fellow art student. They went on to have two daughters. Harry was away for most of the Great War, and Noel stayed with her daughter Hazel in Bath Cottage in Speen. A few years later her father set up his artistic daughters in two matching houses, with purpose-built attic studios, on an estate then being built in south west London. The address of Noel Nisbet and Harry Bush was 19 Queensland Avenue, Merton Part, Wimbledon, SW19 and they lived there for the rest of their lives. Charles Adderton was an accomplished landscape painter in watercolour. He was born in Nottingham in 1866, but spent periods of his life living in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. He studied at the Scarborough School of Art under Albert Strange and had a studio in Scarborough in 1894, later living in Robin Hood’s Bay. In 1920 he was again in Nottingham where he exhibited a total of 226 paintings in the Nottingham City Art Gallery. Adderton had a reputation far beyond the Midlands however and he also exhibited in the leading London galleries from 1890, including 7 paintings at the Royal Academy, and others at the Royal Society of British Artists British Academy and the Royal Institute. He was a keen yachtsman and his landscapes included many coastal scenes. This original watercolour is a study in blues!
