Inspired by cartography from an early age, Chase Langford’s abstract paintings transform the familiarity of cities and maps into fluid visions, evoking the feeling of the location with carefully selected color and precise shapes. In the 1980’s, after studying cartography at UC Santa Barbara and drawing maps for the UCLA faculty, Langford began exploring ways to combine his mastery of map-making with his love of fine art.
In his original map paintings, Langford reinterprets geography by taking selected features from maps and filling in the reconfigured shapes with flurries of color, exploring varied locations such as Essex, England and the Galapagos Islands. In his “Morphic” series, Langford once again finds inspiration in specific geographic regions, abstracting them until they are nearly unrecognizable with colors interweaving and flowing around each other. Almost seeming to mimic the fluid strata of the Earth, Langford adds and scrapes away layers of oil paint, building up intricate textures while simultaneously revealing the colors below.
Langford’s highly-collected “Chroma” series began as a happy mistake. One day, displeased with the brushwork of a painting, he decided to obscure the image by painting small rows of vertical brushstrokes; in doing so, he took note of the beauty of organic uniformity. After years of refining his technique, Langford created the trance-like paintings that he likes to think of as rows of city blocks on a map.
Langford has completed many site-specific commissions, including for Monique Lhuillier, Inc.; the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation; and Caesar’s Palace...

One of a Kind
By Doug Smith
Located in Napa, CA
ÆRENA Galleries & Gardens is delighted to unveil the newest paintings by California landscape painter, Doug Smith. Known for his unique depictions of agrarian landscapes, Smith has long been fascinated by the vast mosaics of the archetypal American West. The inspired, stunning paintings blend aerial landscapes, Smith’s experience in graphic design, and a traditional detailed vignette showing a peek into pastoral American life.
With vivid planes of color and an attention to refined geometric composition, Smith’s paintings are an intimate mix between abstract expressionism and a small dash of realistic landscape painting, inspired by long flights over the country and even longer drives through it. The inclusion of weathered barns...

Strawberry
By Anastasia Faiella
Located in Napa, CA
Anastasia has a rich and creative artistic background. She earned her Masters in Fine Arts from the University of California at Berkeley in 2004 and, prior to that, attended the University of Minnesota, where she earned her Bachelors degree in Art History.
“ In my work as an abstract oil painter, I see my process as an intimate experience of my observed and felt connection to the natural world. My paintings, rendered as abstractions, seek to find the harmony, balance and meditative rhythm found naturally in the nature I observe. Interested in material effects, I apply paint in various thicknesses and at various speeds to allow the materials in their organic form to challenge the paint rendered by my hand. The Scale of my paintings is equal to the intimacy of my encounters with the small, mundane and overlooked details in nature. Like the layered waves of a conical seashell or the changing patterns of rain as it runs down a muddy hillside, the rhythm of time passing in my paintings is evident in the process by which they are created.”
Faiella has exhibited all over the continental United States, with a focus on the Northwestern states. In 1998, she won the Julian Easels Award of Excellence for her submission to The Amsterdam Art Exhibit at the Fort Mason...

Immaculate Sigh of Stars
By Adam Shaw
Located in Napa, CA
Oil on Canvas
"The most important thing any art can offer is a bridge to a deeper experience of oneself. The experience of art occurs outside of time —both its making and its effect— despite the necessary parenthesis of its historic moment. This is the framework from which my efforts proceed.”
New York City-born painter Adam Shaw’s vivid, intricate paintings which are woven with literary allusions and scientific formulae, provide an impressively accurate snapshot of the artist’s rich and diverse life experience. Shaw’s large paintings bring to life intensely-colored abstract shapes by layering his paintings with words...
