The sculptures portray young women in animated, dance-like postures, wearing flowing dress that recalls Greek wet drapery. One figure holds a musical instrument, while the other spreads her arms as if to music. The figures stand on integral rocky bases above matching marble plinths. Each piece is affixed with a plaque, one reading ‘Libellule par Geo Maxim...

CHARLES VALTON French, 1851-1913 Lioness and Two Cubs Reddish-brown patinated bronze Signed "C. VALTON" to base over foundry cachet Item # 301HOC20P A good early cast circa 1910 of Charles Valton's Lioness and Two Cubs, it is a beautifully detailed sand-casting with a rich red-oxide and medium-brown surface patination that highlights the texture of the surface. Authentic Thomas Cartier French Bronze Sculpture of Indian Warrior and Lynx
By Thomas Cartier
Located in Shippensburg, PA
An intense and dramatic scene capturing a moment of danger in the frontier, it would seem this Native American warrior was attempting to snare and kill this lynx, though the hunt has gone wrong and the beast is equally ready for the fight. The balance of the two is perhaps the more interesting story of the group, where the ending cannot be determined from the material presented. We can hope the warrior defeated his foe, but the claws on his leg are powerful and determined as the cat rears his head in fury. The bronze is cast in the lost-wax method with an acid patina creating a beautiful blend of golds, burnished brass and darker brown accents in both figures. They stand over a naturalistic base signed in his typical block lettering Cartier. It is a rare and powerful group, one of many various models he sculpted capturing Native American warriors battling...
