Thomas Blinks was born in Maidstone, Kent on 29 October 1853 to Richard Blinks and Eleanor Poile. His father was a master butcher in Ticehurst and the family lived above the shop, which is still operates as a butchers today. Thomas initially worked for his father but his talent for art soon took him in another direction.
He married Louisa Anne Winterbottom on 11 April 1874, at Rye, Sussex and together they had 3 children. They lived in Hawkhurst, Kent before moving to Hackney, London in 1878. Whilst largely self- taught, Blinks would have learnt basic anatomy from working with his father, but he also spent time at Tattersalls canine and horse auctions...

Country Cottage
By Abraham Hulk the Younger
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky.
Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year.
Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...

On a Scotch Hillside & On the Cliffs
Oil on canvas, pair, both signed with old labels verso
Image size: 11.75 inches x 23.75 inches (each)
Size including frame: 19.5 inches x 31.5 inches (each)
A lovely pair of Scottish landscape paintings featuring sheep and cattle by Robert Gallon. The first depicts Highland sheep on a hillside with a Scottish loch below. The second painting shows Highland cattle grazing on cliffs overlooking the sea. At the time of these paintings, Gallon was living at 32 Alma Square in St John’s Wood and they were most likely painted during one of his excursions to the Highlands.
Robert Gallon was a landscape painter born in Deptford, Kent in 1845 to the artist Robert Samuel Ennis Gallon (1807-1867) and his wife Cecilia Ann Russell. He lived with his family at Evelyn Place in Deptford. He was most likely tutored by his father; however, his subject matter was inspired by artists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole.
Gallon began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868 and in 1873 made his debut at Royal Academy from an address at 12, Tavistock Row, Covent Garden. He was a regular contributor to both galleries, continuing to exhibit at the RSBA until 1893 and at the RA until 1903. He also exhibited at some of the smaller establishments including the Hampstead Art Society, Mendoza Gallery and St James’s Gallery as well as at provincial galleries.
By 1876, he had moved to 28 Alma Square in St John’s Wood. He married Catherine Elizabeth Atkinson on 18 July, 1877 and together they had 3 children...

Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils.
Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'.
-
Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...
