orom id atset (2) / figuration, agave, green, blue, photorealism, landscape
By Silke Albrecht
Located in Cologne, DE
The entire, complicated titled of this impressive, photorealist painting is "orom id atset (2) - (She lies stretched out naked on the rocky shore)". With the phrase "orom id atset" Albrecht refers to the Sicilian habit of planting plants – like agaves – in terracotta pots that have the form of the head of a black person ("tersta di moro"). This is a century old tradition and Albrecht questions it by turning it around. The second phrase of the title, "She lies stretched out naked on the rocky shore", is a reference to a trip to Sicilia Silke Albrecht enjoyed together with a friend. Obviously, the extremely photographic depiction of the agave has a photograph as a basis. However, the blue in the upper ledft corner is a night blue and the plant is shown in full daylight. Thus, it becomes clear that the image is a constructed image and that the power of the painting is created by the decision of the artist. Also: a photographer would – most probably – not cut the leaves of the agave on all sides. She / he would rather show the whole plant, as a natural object. Albrecht, contrary to that, has decided to zoom in. Not only for the sake of making more and other details of the leaves, dfor instance, visible, but also for producing this outward energy the leaves have. They are almost cutting through the air, they do in fact cut the border of the painting. This is an artistic strategy that has been employed also (maybe invented) by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. It is thus not a new strategy. But one that is still very effective. By doing so Albrecht brings us very close to nature and nature is her topic – when we see "Orom id atset" we even cannot see ourselves as not being in the very same spatial realm as the plant is. There is not "it" (the plant) and a distanced and recognizing "us", but only the one direct territory of the plant. Accordingly, in most of her canvaces Albrecht is working on the relation of us – human being – and the world. Or, to put it another way, the central point in Silke Albrecht‘s work is the examination of the loss of a uniform worldview in the context of contemporary geological, ecological and geopolitical problems. Albrecht‘s paintings can be understood as manifestos of a critical – in the double sense of criticizing and analyzing – attitude towards anthropocentric views of the world. Silke Albrecht (* 1986 in Soest, lives and works Düsseldorf) studied at the Kunstakademie Münster with Prof. Michael van...
