Artist: Samuel Alken Jr.
The Hunt Breaking cover
By Samuel Alken Jnr.
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
Samuel Alken Jnr (1784-1825) The Hunt Breaking cover Signed 'S. Alken.' lower right Oil on canvas Canvas size - 24 x 36 in Framed size - 31 x 42 1/2 in Samuel Alken junior was the eldest son of Sporting artist Samuel Alken (1756-1815), he was born on April 10th. The family mostly became sporting artists, his younger brothers Henry Thomas (Ben Tally Ho), George and Sefferien. Little is known about his life, in his father's will he was the only son mentioned, but this was to leave him 1s., which presumably was a derogatory legacy perhaps because, as Shaw Sparrow suggests, he traded on his father's name, signing in the same manner. However, as he often signed quite clearly S. Alken Jnr one feels it unlikely, but it does imply S. Alken Snr also painted sporting pictures. There has always been great confusion over the Samuel Alkens and for a long time they were looked upon as one person. number of prints were published after Samuel Junior's work including a set of sixteen published in the early 1820's depicting various sports, including hunting, racing, shooting and fishing. In the works recorded by him, his style would seem closer to that of Barenger. A lot of small wooded shooting scenes...

Located in Hillsborough, NC
Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. The first depicts Highland sheep on a hillside with a Scottish loch below. The second painting shows Highland cattle grazing on cliffs overlooking the sea. At the time of these paintings, Gallon was living at 32 Alma Square in St John’s Wood and they were most likely painted during one of his excursions to the Highlands. Robert Gallon was a landscape painter born in Deptford, Kent in 1845 to the artist Robert Samuel Ennis Gallon (1807-1867) and his wife Cecilia Ann Russell. He lived with his family at Evelyn Place in Deptford. He was most likely tutored by his father; however, his subject matter was inspired by artists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole. Gallon began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868 and in 1873 made his debut at Royal Academy from an address at 12, Tavistock Row, Covent Garden. He was a regular contributor to both galleries, continuing to exhibit at the RSBA until 1893 and at the RA until 1903. He also exhibited at some of the smaller establishments including the Hampstead Art Society, Mendoza Gallery and St James’s Gallery as well as at provincial galleries. By 1876, he had moved to 28 Alma Square in St John’s Wood. He married Catherine Elizabeth Atkinson on 18 July, 1877 and together they had 3 children...
