Roy Ahlgren Figurative Prints
American, 1927-2011
Roy Ahlgren (1927-2011)
Algren was born in 1927 in Erie, PA. He is a self-taught painter. In 1964 he began to work in the op and hard edge technique. He received more than 60 prizes, among them purchase awards from the Seattle Art Museum, Minot State College, Texas Tech University Museum and the Mississippi Art Association. He exhibited in many national print shows. (from bio provided by the Associated American Artists, NY.)
Roy Ahlgren entered the art world somewhat in reverse. While most artists start by recording realistic subjects and moving to abstract work later in their careers, Ahlgren began creating geometric abstract designs and continued to do so for 23 years. His media was both serigraphy and traditionally brushed pigment onto canvas. His compositions were unique with many being mathematically constructed with considerable precision.(Biography provided by MGH Discovered Art)

Robert Indiana donated all of the proceeds of the sale of this work to electing Barack Obama. During the 2020 election, it became an even greater part of American popular culture when it was featured on the influential NBC show Saturday Night Live's cold open skit featuring the Vice Presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence. About the Artist: Victor Vasarely ((French/Hungarian, 1906–1997) was credited as the grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Born Győző Vásárhelyi on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, he briefly studied medicine, but after two years he dedicated himself to learn academic painting. In the late 1920s, Vasarely enrolled at the Muhely Academy in Budapest, where the syllabus was largely based on Walter Gropius’s Bauhaus school in Germany. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked in advertising agencies to support himself as a graphic artist while creating many works including Zebra (1937), which is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op Art. The artist experimented in a style based in Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism during the 1940s, before arriving at his hallmark checkerboard paintings...
