Ron English Prints and Multiples
American, b. 1966
Ron English (b. 1959) is a pioneering American contemporary artist who explores the intersection of street art, brand imagery, superhero comics, art history, advertising, and politics. His cheeky interpretation of Pop Art comes alive in vibrant drawings, paintings, and murals. English’s imagery is found on the street, in museums, in movies, books, and television. His irreverent, imagined characters include MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in Morgan Spurlock’s 2004 documentary Super Size Me, and Abraham Obama, a mischievous hybrid of the 16th and 44th U.S. presidents. Sociocultural commentary underscores his work, exemplified by his iteration of Ronald McDonald as a western culture “Buddha” gorging McDonald’s to expose the insatiable slothfulness of consumerism.
English transformed his early experience as an art reproducer to become a founding co-creator of illegal public art campaigns in the early 1980s. His controversial street art activities are the subject matter and explored extensively in POPaganda - The Art & Crimes of Ron English, a documentary directed by Pedro Carvajal. An acclaimed outlaw artist, English never became an official member, but he has participated with the Billboard Liberation Front, which practices culture jamming by altering billboards to change keywords and radically alter the message, often to make an anti-corporate statement. He frequently targets corporations and their mascots, including Joe Camel and Mickey Mouse. English seeks to inspire people to question consumer capitalism through his exaggerated, grotesque characters.
English is a masterful oil painter working in a photorealist style. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in Denton, and an MFA from The University of Texas, English moved to New York City, where he apprenticed with several artists and started selling his own work. English reworks art historical imagery, such as depictions of Picasso’s Guernica, as a template to explore universal issues. English’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Paris, the Whitney Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Paterson Museum in Paterson, New Jersey. He has exhibited at the Station Museum in Houston and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Washington DC. In November of 2021, English’s enormous immersive installation Sugar Circus opened an exhibition at The Nest in Q Plex in Nanshan District in Shenzhen, China. His work has been featured in solo and group shows around the world.(Biography provided by Chase Contemporary)

John “CRASH” Matos and Eric Orr met for the first time as high school students. Although the exact location is unclear, both agree that it would have been at either Fashion Moda or the Writers’ Bench at 149th Street and Grand Concourse.
Founded by Stefan Eins in 1978, Fashion Moda began as a “cultural concept” whose principles revolved around the fact that art can be made by anyone, anywhere and art should be accessible to anyone, anywhere. Located in the South Bronx, Fashion Moda embraced new talent and encouraged creative production across all mediums. The gallery has been credited as a major force behind the recognition of graffiti writing as an art form and it played a pivotal role in a community where Hip Hop was rapidly emerging. CRASH was only 19 years old when he curated “Graffiti Art Success for America” at Fashion Moda and his varied experiences at the gallery would later inspire his founding of WALLWORKS.
The 149th Street Writers’ Bench, located at the back of the uptown...

Dolk Lundgren (Dolk is Norwegian for dagger/knife) has rapidly gained an international following since emerging on the urban art scene. He studied Graphic Design in Norway and Melbourne before moving into stencil art.
As Norway's most distinguished graffiti artist, Dolk's work can be seen adorning walls throughout Europe. Since 2006 Dolk has moved some of his pieces into galleries whilst continuing to work in streets throughout the world.
Early in his career, Dolk's work was often attributed to Banksy due to similarities in style, but in recent years, Dolk has established himself as a master with the stencil in his own right. His sharp and intelligent images have proved popular with the public.
In 2010 Dolk created three large-scale cheeky works for the opening of Halden Prison, a state-of-the-art correctional facility in Norway. The murals were created on the walls of the exercise yard. The Daily Mail...

Abraham Obama

Sheet size: 18 x 24 inches
English created Abraham Obama during the US presidential election 2008, where he mixed the facial impressions from Abraham Lincoln with Barack Obama.
Ron English, born 1966 in Dallas, Texas, is a contemporary artist. His focus is on advertising and popular brand imagery. He invented the name POPaganda for his unique style. His art features a mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, including comic superhero mythology and totems of art history. He is considered important in the advancement of street art away from traditional wild-style lettering. Clever statements and masterful trompe l'oeil based art is his way of art. Since the 1980s, he has created illegal murals and billboards.
English can be considered the "celebrated prankster father of dollar-pop". He works on carefully created corporate icons in a way that they are turned upside down and therefore used against the very corporation they are meant to represent. Some of his illegal murals include one on the Berlin Wall's Checkpoint Charlie in 1989 and on the Palestinian separation wall in the West Bank in 2007 which he created with fellow street artists Banksy and Swoon. He has drawn several album covers for The Dandy Warhols, Slash and Chris Brown. Some of his paintings are used in Morgan Spurlock's documentaries Super Size Me and POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. He has received special thanks and is credited as "The Greatest Living Artist". English is known for his photorealist techniques, his inventive use of colour and comic book collage. He sexualized animals, skeletal figures, Marilyn Monroe with Mickey Mouse breasts, the corpulent fast food spokesman MC Supersized, and of course Abraham Obama.
Pedro Carvajal made a documentary of English entitled Poopaganda, named after one of his art books. English is also a subject of Michael Leavitt's The Art Army action figures.
In 2012 English, together with his artist friends Shepard Fairey, Kenny Scharf and Robbie Conal...
