Artist: Robert Von Sternberg
Columbia Ice Field / color photography
By Robert Von Sternberg
Located in Burlingame, CA
Climate change, traffic, construction cone dots a landscape of ice in this provocative museum matted Archival Pigment Print - photograph from Robert Von Sternberg who has lived and worked all his life in Los Angeles County, identifying human incursions into the natural world as a recurring theme at the heart of his photographic practice. Von Sternberg is drawn to capturing images of man intruding on nature more than any other and this is the visual thread that runs through the body of his work. Avid travelers, von Sternberg and his wife Patricia are especially fond of road trips, where the photographer delights in the offbeat side of the American touristic tradition. Far from focusing on the most canonical or scenic destinations, the artist seizes on the visual possibilities of overlooked roadside attractions and chance conjunctions. The surreal artificial lighting that illuminates the American nighttime often provides the "definitive photographic images - which sometimes also include the photographer himself. More often, though, von Sternberg captures scenes in which human figures are distant or absent. In this, his decisive moments are very unlike the densely populated ones pictured by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Still, Von Sternberg's roadside moments are crowded despite their ostensible vacancy. Through the roads, fences, signage, buildings, and all the other material structures of civilization, humanity marks the land; even in our bodily absence, we make our presence insistently known. Image captured digitally. Von Sternberg prints his own images on a 3880 Epson professional printer using archival Epson Ultrachrome pigment inks. Moab Juniper Baryta cotton rag paper stock, which is archival / 100 yrs. Papers are 13 x 19 inches. Outer dimension of the museum matting: 17 ½ x 23 ¼ inches. Robert Von Sternberg's photographs are collected worldwide and included in some of the world's most prestigious public and private institutions. 'Columbia Ice Field' is including in the permanent collections of the following Museums. Breaking from the gallery’s traditional style of display, West’s photography will be creatively integrated with Robbins’ artisan furniture. Designed and built on the edge of the forest by indigenous people using centuries-old techniques, these products are born out of Tucker Robbins’ travels to remote locations. Whether woven textile, clay pottery or wood sculpture, these sustainably made products are materials that have been salvaged and refashioned into works of exquisite craftsmanship that are truly one of a kind. Found objects are essential in the installation. Boosting from an impressive visual flow, the installation discovers intersections between the works that can be seen to echo throughout the space. As West’s “Passion Lies at the Edge of Uncertainty” presents an image composed of dark negative space leading down to a snake skin on the surface below, Robbins’ “Snaka Waka Table” is an Acadian side-table found nearby that was named by the Bamun carvers of Cameroon who likened its circular design to snake walking. Together, West and Robbins make for an installation that invites audiences to sit down and connect to the fine art objects in a manner different from what they are regularly accustomed to at the Robin Rice Gallery. In speaking of her influences, West cites Josef Sudek as an early inspiration on her work for how he made evocative black and white photographs out of everyday happenings. Sudek himself once remarked, “I like to tell stories about the life of inanimate objects, to relate something mysterious.” This statement resonates well within West’s own work as she demonstrates a similar gift for finding the beauty in the banality of things overlooked. Her work also shares a kindred spirit with the eccentric assemblages of disparate images made by Joseph Cornell and the experimental platinum prints of Jan Groover...
