Pablo Picasso Art

Spanish, 1881-1973

One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.

“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.

Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

Pablo Picasso - Jeu de la Cape - Original Lithograph
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Collonge Bellerive, Geneve, CH
Original Lithograph by Picasso Atelier Mourlot. Paper: Vélin. Dimensions : 9 5/8 x 12 7/16 inches Reference: Bloch 1015 Picasso is not just a man and his work. Picasso is always a legend, indeed almost a myth. In the public view he has long since been the personification of genius in modern art. Picasso is an idol, one of those rare creatures who act as crucibles in which the diverse and often chaotic phenomena of culture are focussed, who seem to body forth the artistic life of their age in one person. The same thing happens in politics, science, sport. And it happens in art. Early life Born in Malaga, Spain, in October of 1881, he was the first child born in the family. His father worked as an artist, and was also a professor at the school of fine arts; he also worked as a curator for the museum in Malaga. Pablo Picasso studied under his father for one year, then went to the Academy of Arts for one year, prior to moving to Paris. In 1901 he went to Paris, which he found as the ideal place to practice new styles, and experiment with a variety of art forms. It was during these initial visits, which he began his work in surrealism and cubism style, which he was the founder of, and created many distinct pieces which were influenced by these art forms. Updates in style During his stay in Paris, Pablo Picasso was constantly updating his style; he did work from the blue period, the rose period, African influenced style, to cubism, surrealism, and realism. Not only did he master these styles, he was a pioneer in each of these movements, and influenced the styles to follow throughout the 20th century, from the initial works he created. In addition to the styles he introduced to the art world, he also worked through the many different styles which appeared, while working in Paris. Not only did he continually improve his style, and the works he created, he is well known because of the fact that he had the ability to create in any style which was prominent during the time. Russian ballet In 1917, Pablo Picasso joined the Russian Ballet, which toured in Rome; during this time he met Olga Khoklova, who was a ballerina; the couple eventually wed in 1918, upon returning to Paris. The couple eventually separated in 1935; Olga came from nobility, and an upper class lifestyle, while Pablo Picasso led a bohemian lifestyle, which conflicted. Although the couple separated, they remained officially married, until Olga's death, in 1954. In addition to works he created of Olga, many of his later pieces also took a centralized focus on his two other love interests, Marie Theresa...

Danseurs et Joueur de Diaule (Dancers and Diaulos Player), A.R. 341 can be compared to several other white earthenware pieces created by Picasso in 1956. Framed under a sloping mountain, two figures dance with arms raised above their heads, hands clasped in a spontaneous gesture. Leafy trees and flowers mark...

Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959
By Pablo Picasso
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Considered to be one of Picasso’s monumental linoleum prints, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse), 1959 is a large-scale artwork that captures the essence of this artist’s innovation and minimalist creativity. His simple lines curve and undulated together to form the characters of the piece: the woman – feminine and robust, the horse – whimsical and characteristic, and the picador – strong and masculine. All three subjects create a triad composition making way for a harmonious and balanced piece. The entire work exudes an air of femininity and mystery, all set against a backdrop of a misty grey helping to create Picasso’s sensual environment of intrigue. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme (Picador, Woman, and Horse) is a color linocut on Arches paper hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered 21/50 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: Pablo Picasso Picador, Woman, and Horse (Picador debout avec son cheval et une femme), 1959 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnés and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work): 1. Police once thought he was responsible for stealing the Mona Lisa, and ironically, more Picasso paintings have been reported as missing or stolen than those of any other artist in history. Before he died at the age of 91, Picasso reportedly said, "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink anymore," and his parting words inspired Paul McCartney to write the song "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)."
