Omega Watches

It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. But the universal love for vintage Omega watches isn't confined to astronomers, and there’s more to the company’s heritage than the story of the Moonwatch.

The house’s origins date to 1848, when Swiss watchmaker Louis Brandt first set up shop. His sons Louis-Paul and César took over after his death, and in 1894, the pair developed an intriguing new movement.

Not only was it highly accurate, but every part was replaceable, making it easy for any professional to service. The Brandts called their movement the Omega, and as its popularity spread, they changed their company’s name to that of its flagship product.

In 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps designated Omega as an official supplier, and during World War II it became the principal watch supplier for the British forces and their allies. These commissions further strengthened Omega’s commitment to ensuring its products’ reliability under extreme conditions. In 1948, it launched the versatile Seamaster. Developed as a dive watch, the Seamaster proved its durability at high altitudes and freezing temperatures, as well. (Here is the 1stDibs guide to spotting a fake Omega Seamaster.

Thanks in part to its rugged reputation and Omega’s links to the British military, it became James Bond’s watch of choice in 1995, appearing in GoldenEye and every succeeding Bond movie; it returned in 2021’s No Time to Die. Nevertheless, the most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists.

Worn by Buzz Aldrin during the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission, it’s the only watch certified by NASA for extravehicular activity (space walks) — and, as far as we know, the only one approved by the Russian space agency, too.

Watch aficionados and aficionadas alike can find vintage Omega watches today on 1stDibs.

Omega Cocktail - Vintage White Gold & Diamond Manual Wind Ladies' Watch
By Omega
Located in Antwerp, BE
Up for sale is this beautiful Swiss Made 18k White Gold and Diamond Ladies' cocktail watch with reference number 7256, made by Omega and dating back to 1969 based on its serial number. The watch case measures approximately 16.5mm in diameter, is crafted from solid 18k white gold, and seamlessly flows over into the white gold mesh bracelet. The factory set diamond bezel contains 20 high quality brilliant cut diamonds totalling approximately 0.4ct. The dial is kept to its bare minimum: simplistic hour markers combined with a vertically brushed silver tone dial and baton shaped hands create a minimalist watch face. Behind the solid gold case back we find the beating heart of this watch: a mechanical hand-winding Omega movement with caliber reference 650. Thanks to the incorporation of this movement, the watch case can be kept as thin as 6mm. For such a sleek and refined watch, its total weight still adds up to about 36.5 grams. The watch is sold as pre-owned and vintage, however it still is in good condition considering its age. You will find wear marks on the case and bracelet, but no coarse damage. The case has been cleaned thoroughly, but was left unpolished to maintain its original edges and curves. The sapphire crystal looks unscathed to the naked eye. The crown is original and signed with the Omega logo. The movement was freshly serviced, and is working perfectly. Please study the pictures in this listing well: they show the watch in the condition that it is in, with no digital enhancements to make it look better than it is. We are sure that you like honesty, and so do we. Please do note that the clasp has a small adjustment setting, but the bracelet on this watch is otherwise not drastically resizable. Ideally, the watch fits wrists with a circumference between 16 and 17.5cm. Accompanying the watch is its lovely original clamshell Omega presentation box, but sadly no paperwork is present with this piece. Your new timepiece will be packaged with great care, and will be shipped out as fast as possible. We usually ship the same day your payment comes in, and provide full insurance as well as a tracking code for all of our packages. If you have any questions regarding the item or our services, please do not hesitate to reach out. We'll gladly assist as soon as we get the chance. Questions About Omega Watches
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
You can buy Omega watches from a variety of sources. One option is to purchase directly from the manufacturer through their online website. Alternatively, shop the selections available from authorized Omega retailers or on reputable online platforms. You'll find a variety of Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, Omega has an online store. However, only a selection of the Swiss luxury watchmaker's timepieces are available through the site. Others can be purchased through Omega boutiques, authorized dealers and trusted online platforms. On 1stDibs, find a large collection of Omega watches from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
Which Omega watches are the most collectible of the Swiss luxury watchmaker's timepieces may differ depending on tastes and preferences. Some models that are especially collectible include the Seamaster 300, the Railmaster and the Speedmaster Professional Moonphase. Some collectors focus on a specific type, like 33.3-caliber chronographs or Omega watches worn in James Bond films. When deciding which Omega timepieces to collect, choose the ones that appeal most to you. On 1stDibs, explore a large assortment of vintage Omega watches from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, Omega Seamasters are generally good watches. For divers, the watches remain water-resistant in deep water. Some models also have a helium escape valve and a unidirectional rotating bezel for divers. Even those who remain on dry land can appreciate the reliable movements, fine materials and careful craftsmanship that go into every Omega Seamaster timepiece. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Omega Seamaster watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
What Omega watch is the most famous is open for debate. Many people would argue that the Moonwatch is the most well-known model because astronaut Buzz Aldrin was wearing one when he became the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. The James Bond movies of the 1990s and the 21st century have also made various models of the Omega Speedmaster iconic. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of Omega watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Which Omega watch is the most classic is open for debate. Over the years, many Omega watches have become iconic. Some of the Swiss watchmaker's most acclaimed designs include the Aqua Terra Shades, the Aqua Terra 150M, the Diver 300M, the Constellation, the Moonwatch Professional and the Seamaster 300. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of Omega watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Yes, Omega watches are sought-after by many collectors. However, some models are more collectible than others. The most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists and has become a favorite among collectors. Shop a large collection of Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Yes, Omega watches are real gold. Many gold-tone Omega timepieces are made from solid 18-karat gold, but the luxury watchmaker also produces its own unique gold alloys. An example is Bronze Gold, a 9-karat gold designed to develop a rich patina over time. Explore a wide range of Omega gold watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022

Yes, Omega is a respected watch. Omega has been producing quality timepieces since Louis Brandt founded the company in 1848 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. His sons Louis-Paul and Csar took over after his death, and in 1894, the pair developed an intriguing new movement that they called the Omega. Not only was it highly accurate, but every part was replaceable, making it easy for any professional to service. In 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps designated Omega as an official supplier, and during World War II, it became the principal watch supplier for the British forces and their allies. These commissions further strengthened Omega's commitment to ensuring its products' reliability under extreme conditions. Thanks in part to its rugged reputation and Omega's links to the British military, it became James Bond's watch of choice in 1995, appearing in GoldenEye and every subsequent Bond movie. Buzz Aldrin also wore an Omega watch when he became the first man to walk on the moon. On 1stDibs, find a diverse assortment of Omega watches.
