Omega Furniture

It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. But the universal love for vintage Omega watches isn't confined to astronomers, and there’s more to the company’s heritage than the story of the Moonwatch.

The house’s origins date to 1848, when Swiss watchmaker Louis Brandt first set up shop. His sons Louis-Paul and César took over after his death, and in 1894, the pair developed an intriguing new movement.

Not only was it highly accurate, but every part was replaceable, making it easy for any professional to service. The Brandts called their movement the Omega, and as its popularity spread, they changed their company’s name to that of its flagship product.

In 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps designated Omega as an official supplier, and during World War II it became the principal watch supplier for the British forces and their allies. These commissions further strengthened Omega’s commitment to ensuring its products’ reliability under extreme conditions. In 1948, it launched the versatile Seamaster. Developed as a dive watch, the Seamaster proved its durability at high altitudes and freezing temperatures, as well. (Here is the 1stDibs guide to spotting a fake Omega Seamaster.

Thanks in part to its rugged reputation and Omega’s links to the British military, it became James Bond’s watch of choice in 1995, appearing in GoldenEye and every succeeding Bond movie; it returned in 2021’s No Time to Die. Nevertheless, the most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists.

Worn by Buzz Aldrin during the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission, it’s the only watch certified by NASA for extravehicular activity (space walks) — and, as far as we know, the only one approved by the Russian space agency, too.

Watch aficionados and aficionadas alike can find vintage Omega watches today on 1stDibs.

Questions About Omega Furniture
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, Omega has an online store. However, only a selection of the Swiss luxury watchmaker's timepieces are available through the site. Others can be purchased through Omega boutiques, authorized dealers and trusted online platforms. On 1stDibs, find a large collection of Omega watches from some of the world's top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 27, 2023
Which Omega watches are the most collectible of the Swiss luxury watchmaker's timepieces may differ depending on tastes and preferences. Some models that are especially collectible include the Seamaster 300, the Railmaster and the Speedmaster Professional Moonphase. Some collectors focus on a specific type, like 33.3-caliber chronographs or Omega watches worn in James Bond films. When deciding which Omega timepieces to collect, choose the ones that appeal most to you. On 1stDibs, explore a large assortment of vintage Omega watches from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
Yes, Omega watches are real gold. Many gold-tone Omega timepieces are made from solid 18-karat gold, but the luxury watchmaker also produces its own unique gold alloys. An example is Bronze Gold, a 9-karat gold designed to develop a rich patina over time. Explore a wide range of Omega gold watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
What Omega watch is the most famous is open for debate. Many people would argue that the Moonwatch is the most well-known model because astronaut Buzz Aldrin was wearing one when he became the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. The James Bond movies of the 1990s and the 21st century have also made various models of the Omega Speedmaster iconic. On 1stDibs, explore a wide range of Omega watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Which Omega watch is the most classic is open for debate. Over the years, many Omega watches have become iconic. Some of the Swiss watchmaker's most acclaimed designs include the Aqua Terra Shades, the Aqua Terra 150M, the Diver 300M, the Constellation, the Moonwatch Professional and the Seamaster 300. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of Omega watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Yes, Omega watches are sought-after by many collectors. However, some models are more collectible than others. The most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists and has become a favorite among collectors. Shop a large collection of Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, Omega Seamasters are generally good watches. For divers, the watches remain water-resistant in deep water. Some models also have a helium escape valve and a unidirectional rotating bezel for divers. Even those who remain on dry land can appreciate the reliable movements, fine materials and careful craftsmanship that go into every Omega Seamaster timepiece. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of Omega Seamaster watches.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
To clean an Omega watch, use a toothbrush with extra-soft bristles, a small amount of soap and warm water to gently brush your Omega watch clean. You can then dry it with a clean microfiber cloth. If you prefer, use a professional cleaning service to keep it looking its best. Shop a range of authentic Omega watches from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Yes, as of December 2021, all of the timepieces made by Omega are automatic watches. In the past, Omega did offer mechanical watches. Some of the watchmaker's most well-known collections are the Constellation, the Seamaster and the Speedmaster. Shop a selection of Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
You can buy Omega watches from a variety of sources. One option is to purchase directly from the manufacturer through their online website. To identify your Omega bracelet, locate its reference number. You will usually find it on the underside of the bracelet clasp. Once you locate the number, you can use trusted online resources to learn more about the bracelet. On 1stDibs, explore a wide variety of Omega watches from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023
No, Omega is not a Chinese company. Omega is a Swiss luxury watchmaker. Louis Brandt founded Omega in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, in 1848, and the company continues to produce watches in the country. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of Omega watches from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, the Omega Railmaster was discontinued in 1973. The Omega Railmaster was designed to assist railroad workers by featuring a Faraday Cage as its inner case and a thicker dial that would prevent the disruption caused by magnetic fields. Shop a selection of expertly vetted Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 17, 2023
Whether Omega watches are gold depends on the timepiece. The luxury watchmaker does make pieces out of genuine rose, white and yellow gold, but also manufactures timepieces out of steel and other metals. Shop a collection of Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No, Tissot is not owned by Omega. The Swatch Group actually owns both luxury watchmakers. In addition, Swatch controls a number of other brands, including Swatch, Longines and Bregeut. You can find a collection of Tissot and Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Omega has quartz watches. Some popular models include the Omega Speedmaster Skywalker X-33, the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Quartz and the Omega Seamaster Professional Diver 300M Quartz timepieces. You can find a collection of Omega watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The Omega Speedmaster Reduced is a smaller and more budget-friendly version of the Omega Speedmaster. The original Speedmaster is 42mm in diameter, whereas the Speedmaster Reduced is 39mm. Shop a selection of Omega watches, including the Speedmaster and Speedmaster Reduced, on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
The Omega Constellation is called that because it features eight stars on its face. Omega introduced the timepiece in 1952 and included the stars as a nod to the eight precision records it set when tested by third-party experts. Find a collection of Omega Constellation watches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Yes, Omega has automatic watches. Most of the Omega Constellation watches, including the Omega Constellation Globemaster, are automatic watches. An automatic watch uses the motion of the wearer to power the winding mechanism. Find vintage and contemporary Omega watches from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
