French Antique Ormolu Mantel Clock by Leroy Commemorating Napoleon Bonaparte
By LeRoy
Located in London, GB
This fine mantel clock is cast entirely in ormolu by celebrated Parisian clockmaker Leroy and commemorates the return of Napoleon's ashes to France in 1840. The clock is set on a rectangular, tiered base with four decorative feet. The lower tier is centred with a sleeping lion above a plaque showing the scarf, sword and hat of Napoleon. There is a relief plaque above the lion showing a ship off St Helena (the location of Napoleon's exile) and to either side further decorations formed as martial trophies. To the top of the plaque is a portrait medallion of Napoleon with winged cherubs and the letter 'N'. The circular dial of the clock, signed 'Leroy a Paris', is set to the centre above the base within an ormolu border and flanked by the figures of France and an eagle to either side. Between them they hold an urn, which bears the inscription 'Ste Helene / 5 Mai 1821'. The figure of France holds a flag inscribed 'France 1840.' This clock was produced in 1840 by Parisian clockmaker Leroy et fils...

By LeRoy
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
An exceptional Louis XVI style champlevé enamel and gilt-bronze mantel clock with finely painted neoclassical scenes by Leroy & Fils. French, circa 1880. Stamped to the movement ‘LEROY & FILS A PARIS, 823’. This fine gilt-bronze and champlevé enamel clock has an arched case with outset bulbous columns to the angles, it is surmounted by a drum top with a pierced scroll and ball finial and applied with expressive cherub mounts. The front and sides of the clock are all exceptionally finely painted with neoclassical scenes of figures in an architectural setting and the top and base enriched with fine polychrome champlevé enamel. The clock has an enamelled chapter ring with Roman numerals interspersed with anthemion devices and a twin barrelled, eight-day movement striking on a bell. The firm of Leroy et Fils was founded by Bazile Charles Leroy in 1789. He was a clockmaker to the Emperor Napoléon, The Duke of Orleans, The Duke of Bourbon and Princess Pauline. In 1823, he filed a patent for self-winding atmospheric clock operated by weathervane and in 1840 a patent for wind clocks. When Charles Louis died in 1865 his son Louis Leroy...

1950s Art Deco Style Figurative Painting with Horses by Porter Woodruff, Framed
By Porter Woodruff
Located in Morristown, NJ
American intra-war artist and illustrator Porter Woodruff (1894-1959). Arabian Horse scene, oil and gold leaf on board with chalky gouache. Signed Woodruff on lower right of painting. Signature somewhat obscured by frame. His Art Deco-influenced paintings are highly decorative and appealing, the compositions complex and well-thought out. The gold leaf background is decorative and elegant. His are rare Modernist paintings by an artist who found himself at the very heart of design, fashion and celebrity life in the early part of the century. Label at back for Pitt & Scott Ltd London - well known for its expertise in handling antiques, works of art and fragile artefacts. Dimensions: 11.5"h x 15.5"w (sight) 12.5"h x 17.5"w (frame) Porter Woodruff, was an illustrator artist and contributor to Vogue Magazine and Home & Garden (including covers for both). He was one of five artists stationed in Paris in 1923 for Vogue. Woodruff spent considerable time in Tunisia, North Africa, residing with his romantic partner, Romanian socialite George Sebastian. Sebastian owned a lavish, coastal property in then-trendy Hammamet, near Tunis on the Mediterranean. Sebastian fell in love with the simple beauty of the quiet fishing port of Hammamet and was the first of the international set of the times to build his villa there. He started a trend that has never ceased. Frank Lloyd Wright is said to have claimed Dar Sebastian to be ”the most beautiful house I have ever seen”. American and European intelligentsia and upper-crust were attracted to the area between the wars. The artists Cocteau, Elsa Schiaparelli, Paul Klee, Andre Gide, the Sitwells, and Cecil Beaton enjoyed visiting, partying, and undertaking what someone once described as indulging the opportunity to do 'some rather elaborate sinning'. Other visitors included Art Deco designer Jean-Michel Frank, Wallis Simpson, Somerset Maugham, and Greta Garbo, among others. The onset of war disrupted this scene and it never truly regained its former glory. Dar Sebastian was requisitioned by the 'Desert Fox', German General, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel...

French Annular Clock by Leroy & Cie
By LeRoy
Located in New Orleans, LA
Cupid himself indicates the time on this superb Louis XVI-style annular dial clock by L. Leroy & Cie. Sculpted of the finest Carrara marble, this elegant timepiece takes the form of an urn, upon which rotating chapter rings count the minutes and hours, replacing hands. This Neoclassical design also incorporates symbolic elements, from the pinecone finial and snake handles to the helmet and shield of the goddess Minerva, all crafted of doré bronze of the highest caliber. Set atop a matching pedestal, this piece exemplifies the French clock-making expertise of the 19th century. L. Leroy & Cie., who were well-established horologists in Paris during the second half of the 19th century, created some of the finest quality clocks of the day, many with highly complicated movements. This is believed to be the only annular dial clock still on its original Carrara marble base. The hour chapter ring is signed "L. Leroy & Cie/ Paris" Circa 1880 Clock with pedestal: 68 1/2" high x 16 1/2" square Early styles of timekeeping spheres and rotating chapter rings were first used in German Crucifix...
