Emile Gallé Art Nouveau Tray Stand / Serving Table with Inlaid Flowers 1895-1903
By Emile Gallé
Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful and practical Art Nouveau table by one of the French master designers. This elegant and remarkable condition table in the Art Nouveau style is entirely made of beautiful woods and the inlaid floral patterns most connoisseurs will immediately recognize as typically Gallé. What is less typical is the 'burned' maker's mark, but this maker's mark most certainly is by the grandmaster himself and we also found this very same 'tray-table' in one of the books we have on Emile Gallé. Besides a few tiny missing pieces of inlay this tray-design table top is in superb condition and the hand carved and also flower inspired base is simply mint. Thanks to the elegant design and the wonderful patinas this rare, one-piece Gallé table...

Emile Gallé Art Nouveau Marquetry Nest of Four Tables Seascape Boats, Circa 1900
By Emile Gallé
Located in Norwich, GB
Superb French Art Nouveau nest of tables with graduated tops, having specimen wood inlays with nautical themes of Brittany. Each table signed in marquetry, 'Gallé'. Circa 1900. Each table top is a work of art in its own right, a fabulous series representing seascapes of Brittany in specimen woods. Raised on beechwood chamfered openwork supports, united by stretchers. The main table shows a coastal landscape. The second having boats near the coastline, a lighthouse in the distance. The third, sailing boats at sea with light reflections. The fourth, Breton women in a rowing boat with light reflection, a gull in the foreground. The tables are in very good condition and have their original finish which has been lightly restored, cleaned and wax polished. Showing some age and use related patina marks to the tops. The top table has a few areas of inlay which have raised very slightly, please refer to photographs 17, 18 and 19. They are not loose, and it does not affect the table's use in any way. One of the legs has moved with age, as shown in the last photograph. This however is solid and does not affect the stability of the table. Emile Gallé (1846 – 1904) was one of the most important French designers of the Art Nouveau period. His career took off after his work received praise at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. Within a decade of another successful showing at the Paris Exhibition of 1889, Gallé had reached international fame and his style, with its emphasis on naturalism and floral motifs, was at the forefront of the emerging Art Nouveau movement. In 1901, together with Victor Prouvé, Louis Majorelle, Antonin Daum and Eugène Vallin...

Gallé was the son of a faience and furniture manufacturer and studied philosophy, botany, and drawing in his youth. He later learned glassmaking at Meisenthal and came to work at his father's factory in Nancy following the Franco-Prussian War. His early work was executed using clear glass decorated with enamel, but he soon turned to an original style featuring heavy, opaque glass carved or etched with plant motifs, often in two or more colours as cameo glass. His friend and patron Robert de Montesquiou sent him to Bayreuth with a recommendation to Cosima Wagner, which led to a great enthusiasm for Parsifal. In 1875, he married Henriette Grimm (1848-1914). In 1877, he then assumed his father’s role as director of the Maison Gallé-Reinemer. In that same year, he was elected Secretary-General for the Société centrale d’horticulture de Nancy. He continued to incorporate experimental techniques into his work, such as metallic foils and air bubbles, and also revitalized the glass industry by establishing a workshop to mass-produce his, and other artists', designs. The factory would employ 300 workers and artisans at its height, including the notable glassmaker Eugène Rosseau, and remained in operation until 1936. Gallé wrote a book on art...
