A rare 19th century Coromandel davenport by Edwards & Roberts of London. Featuring beautiful dark Coromandel veneers to each side highlighted with brass beading and turned and fluted gilt decorated ebonized columns. The top with a brass gallery and red faux leather inset writing slope opening to reveal a satinwood lined interior with two drawers above three smaller faux drawers and a hinged pen drawer to the side. Unusually, both sides open with one door concealing four graduated mahogany drawers with turned inset knob handles, and the other a cupboard or bookcase with a single shelf. On a platform base with concealed castors below. With brass keyhole liners, original locks and working keys, the lock to the slope marked ‘HY ‘. Stamped Edwards & Roberts. Some rippling to the veneers around the edge of the flap, shrinkage to the left hand door veneer and door surrounds, losses to the plinth have been filled. The use of variegated ebony, such as Coromandel, calamander and Macassar became popular in English furniture during the Regency period. Wimbledon-Furniture Wimbledon-Furniture is delighted to offer for sale this lovely original circa 1860 Edwards & Roberts ebonised and Walnut writing table desk Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, for an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll price it up for you A really very good looking and exceptionally rare find, fully stamped to the right drawer EDWARDS & ROBERTS, the locks are original and again fully stamped “ Secure Lever” and then the letters VR under the crown, the crown and V.R indicate ownership by the Crown of England, Queen Victoria, expressed in Latin as "Victoria Regina". It doesn't mean it was royalty just that the patent was issued during the period of Queen Victoria. The desk is ebonised as mentioned and has stunning walnut inlay, the craftsmanship in this piece indicate to me this was made for exhibition to show off what the firm can do The desk has been deep cleaned hand condition waxed and hand polished from top to bottom, it’s in lovely period condition throughout.
