Charles Clary Art
American, b. 1980
Charles Clary was born in 1980 in Morristown, Tennessee. He received his BFA in painting with honors from Middle Tennessee State University and his MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design.
He has shown in exhibitions at Galerie EVOLUTION-Pierre Cardin in Paris, France, Pierogi Gallery and Nancy Margolis Gallery in New York, Spoke art in San Francisco, and museum shows at Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, Gadsten Museum of Art, and Cornell Museum of Art. He has also completed a three week residency in Lacoste France, completed a painting assistantship with Joe Amrhein of Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn NYC, and had work acquired by fashion designer Pierre Cardin and gallery owner James Cohan. Clary has been featured in numerous print and Internet interviews including, This is Colossal, WIRED magazine (US and UK), Hi Fructose, Beautifuldecay.com, Bluecanavs Magazine, and This Is Colossal as well as a recent feature in American Craft Magazine. He was also featured in the Art On Paper Art Fair with Kenise Barnes Fine Art. He has also been featured in publications including 500 Paper Objects, Paper Works, Paper Art, Papercraft 2, PUSH: Paper, and The New Twenties.
Charles has exhibited regionally, nationally, and internationally in numerous solo and group shows. Clary currently lives and works in Conway SC.(Biography provided by Paradigm Gallery + Studio)

"I welcome the continual emergence of change, evolution, and the inevitable challenges that
form a large part of a working artist’s life."
With CHEF'S HAT, a recent and evolving work, I am moving into more dimensionality and space.
My intention is to push patterned and embellished surfaces on paper from its naturally flat
surface into a more structural and spatial plane. This involves making sculptural pieces from
paper and experimenting with new construction methods using strips and lengths of paper
over-lapped and fastened together, shaped into objects with physical presence. I feel I am
migrating from the flat surface into the third dimension. I envision the paper constructions
as a landscape to be wandered in and out of, through and around, a space that invites all
and sundry to enter on their own terms. I hold firmly to the belief that my work exhibits a
playfulness that belies a more serious assessment of our social world. I am interested in how
something that is initially perceived as frivolous and celebratory can constitute a reaction
against and resistance to the shadowy world of misfortune, hard luck, and weariness.
Born in 1959, Lanie Gannon was predominantly inspired by the 1970s. Conceptualism is often perceived as a reaction to Minimalism, and the leading art movement of the 1970s, challenging the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. Her sculpted artworks are a confrontation of smooth and grainy texture on the same linear paper. A cloud of small perforations, incisions, and punches which play on the elasticity of the paper, to create a topographic relief. A controlled wandering of dotted lines, scales and bumps are drawn following the movement of her hand on the paper. The flow is both free and thoughtfully planned, allowing unexpected movements and completely abandoning set patterns at times.
Saliba sees herself more like an artisan than an artist in the sense that she is working with texture and touch to create unique intricate sculpted artworks.
Playing with light and shadow, each in her own way ennobles a seemingly banal material with a genuine concern for ethics. Like modern-day memento mori, Saliba’s works transport us into dreamlike worlds in which the evanescence of paper echoes the transience of life, subtly reminding us to enjoy the present moment.
