Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens Animal Paintings

English, 1829-1915

Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was born into an illustrious family with numerous connections to the British Army. His parents, General Charles Lutyens and Frances Jane Fludger. His father was appointed Deputy Commissary General of the Army, a civilian appointment responsible for military procurement. He also served on the staff of General Moore in the Peninsular Campaign and wrote an impressive journal recording the horrors of the ill-fated Retreat on Corunna, escaping from Napoleon’s General Marshall Soult. Charles Lutyens spent his early adult life in the Army, joining the 20th foot and sailed with them in 1850 to serve in Canada. In 1857, he left the army to take up life as a professional artist. He based himself at Onslow Square, London where he soon established a fashionable practice. During this period, Lutyens became a friend of Sir Edwin Landseer, and after him, he named his son in 1863. His patrons included the Duchess of Montrose, Lord Bradford and the Duke of Portland. A companion painting to this was sold by Brightwells in 2018. He was an inventory officer serving in the 20th foot (which became The Lancashire Fusiliers), an artillery officer and later a sculptor, a painter of portraits, animals (particularly horses) and sporting scenes such as racing and hunting. Lutyens exhibited between 1861 and 1903 at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors, British Institution, Grosvenor Gallery, Dudley Museum & Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and the Royal Society of British Artists.

Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. The first depicts Highland sheep on a hillside with a Scottish loch below. The second painting shows Highland cattle grazing on cliffs overlooking the sea. At the time of these paintings, Gallon was living at 32 Alma Square in St John’s Wood and they were most likely painted during one of his excursions to the Highlands. He lived with his family at Evelyn Place in Deptford. He was most likely tutored by his father; however, his subject matter was inspired by artists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole. Gallon began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868 and in 1873 made his debut at Royal Academy from an address at 12, Tavistock Row, Covent Garden. He was a regular contributor to both galleries, continuing to exhibit at the RSBA until 1893 and at the RA until 1903.
