Bvlgari

Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris arrived in Rome in 1881 and set up his own shop there in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (eventually spelled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). In 1905, he opened the company’s flagship boutique on Rome’s Via dei Condotti. Since then, BVLGARI has looked to Rome as a source of reference for its fanciful and decidedly romantic designs for necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other accessories.

Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, BVLGARI’s signature style — bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones — began to emerge when Sotirios’s sons inherited the business, in 1932. The brand truly hit its stride in the dolce vita era of the 1950s and ’60s, when the founder’s grandsons Paolo, Gianni and Nicola Bulgari decisively departed from demure traditional styles to develop the house’s exuberant multi-gem looks, attracting celebrity collectors like Elizabeth Taylor.

In the 1940s, BVLGARI debuted perhaps its most famous design, the Serpenti bracelet watch. The piece’s snakelike coils were made possible by the tubogas jewelry technique, which links a flexible series of thin horizontal bands. Both the sleek, modern tubogas construction and the sinuous snake motif continue to be synonymous with the BVLGARI brand.

On 1stDibs, the collection of vintage BVLGARI jewelry includes rings, pendant necklaces, watches and other accessories.

While the BVLGARI Serpenti watch technically arrived first, it was a decorative bracelet from the Italian luxury jewelry house’s signature line that made a notable impact, thanks to a little help from Hollywood. In 1962, the brand garnered international attention after its now-legendary serpent motif made its way into a photograph taken on the set of the star-studded historical epic Cleopatra. A BVLGARI Serpenti bracelet — with its stunning snake head encrusted with diamonds — was wrapped arou...

The Bvlgari Serpenti motif came out in the 1940s. The first snake jewels in the Bvlgari archives were coiled gold Tubogas bracelets representing the body, with a watch for the head. Initially, the house collaborated on the timepieces with Swiss companies like Vacheron Constantin and Jaeger LeCoultre. Bvlgari began making bold coiled gold bracelets with gem-encrusted snake heads and tails like the one Elizabeth Taylor sported around 1950. Yes, most Bvlgari pieces have serial numbers. When using a serial number to identify an authentic Bvlgari piece, look for crisp, clear numbers that are either engraved or embossed, depending on the item. Although the iconic jewelry house found success with its silverwork and Art Deco designs, popular through the 1920s, Bvlgari’s signature style, which is bold, often using yellow gold embellished with big colorful gemstones, began to emerge when founder Sotirios Voulgaris’s sons inherited the business, in 1932. Yes, BVLGARI is a luxury brand. The term describes a company that produces finely crafted products and sells them at aspirational price points. Bulgari watches, jewelry and accessories fit this definition. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of Bulgari watches and other products.

To know if a Bvlgari ring is real, first examine the stamps. On both sides of authentic rings, you’ll find the Bvlgari logo in the correct font with a “V” in place of the “U.” Some styles have the name just once along with the word “Roma,” while others show the brand name twice with dots separating them. With either style, the letters should be clean and evenly spaced. Replicas may have the correct wording but have only faint stamps or bunched characters. Shop a selection of Bvlgari rings on 1stDibs.

There are a few tell-tale signs you can look for to determine whether your Bvlgari jewelry is real or fake. Authentic Bvlgari uses a capital Latin alphabet, which means that the U is replaced with a V and it is marked as BVLGARI. You can also see the Bvlgari hallmark, the brand’s name, the type of metal and a “Made in Italy” stamp on its jewelry. Shop a collection of authentic BVLGARI jewelry from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.

To check if your BVLGARI ring is real, check all the details of the design. The size of the ring will be stamped inside and should be crisp and easy to read. The ring box will also be stamped with BVLGARI’s logo in gold. Shop a collection of BVLGARI jewelry from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

There are two excellent ways to spot a fake BVLGARI bracelet. All BVLGARI jewelry has a hallmark with the brand’s name and ‘Made in Italy’. Also, BVLGARI uses the Latin alphabet, which replaces the ‘u’ with a ‘v’, a common thing overlooked on fakes. Greek silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris set up his shop in Rome, Italy, in 1884, calling it Bulgari, an Italianization of his last name (eventually spelled BVLGARI, using the classical Latin alphabet in a nod to ancient Roman culture). You can shop expertly vetted BVLGARI designs from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

Key features to look for in a genuine Bvlgari B.Zero1 ring include the materials and stamped lettering on the ring. All genuine B.Zero1 rings from Bvlgari are made of 18K white, yellow, or rose gold. White gold can become less brilliant over time, but fakes made of cheaper silver will show obvious discoloration. The logo and lettering of BVLGARI should be clearly and evenly stamped twice around its band. Bvlgari rings have inspired fakes over the years, so it’s important to purchase from a certified seller. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of expertly-vetted Bvlgari B.Zero1 rings from some of the world’s top sellers.

To tell a fake Bulgari Serpenti watch, start by looking at the brand name on the dial. The correct spelling of Bulgari on a timepiece is "Bvlgari." If you see a "U" instead of a "V," the watch is unlikely to be real. Also, closely examine the hour markers and hands. On fake watches, these elements may not be completely aligned or uniform in shape. Shop a selection of expertly vetted Bulgari Serpenti watches on 1stDibs.
