Atticus Adams Mixed Media

American, b. 1961

Atticus Adams was born in John Day, Oregon and grew up in West Virginia. As a kid he was never exposed to fine art but developed a love of crafts like macramé. While in college, he was given a camera and he took a trip to Washington D.C., a retrospective of Picasso was showing at the National Gallery. He was stunned by the collages, he had never seen anything like them. In 1992, Adams attended an architecture program at Harvard. He was not an architect, but that he loved making models and he discovered metal screens as an artistic medium for the first time. Adams then took art and design classes, first at Tidewater Community College in Virginia, then at RISD, and finally in 2004 at the Yale School of Art. In 2006, Adams moved to Pittsburgh and now shares a loft with his husband Garry.

Sujoon - Haint Blues - Large Sculputural Original Three-Dimensional Wall Art
By Atticus Adams
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Atticus Adams' organically composed modern metal sculptures embody the transformative power of contemporary wall art, illustrating the creation of beauty, meaning, and emotional impact from industrial materials. Using mostly aluminum mesh—generally found in screen doors, windows, and filters—he creates contemporary abstract sculptural artworks and installations, which resemble flowers, clouds, and other natural phenomena. Working in metal, Adams effortlessly transforms rigid material into airy, effervescent artworks. This circular 60-inch high by 60-inch wide and 4-inch deep metal sculpture is a lightweight form created from aluminum mesh, gesso, acrylic paint, and wire. It has metal rings affixed on the back which allows for easy installation. Atticus works spontaneously, feeling his way toward the objects that take shape in his mind as he shapes them almost entirely by hand. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Atticus grew up in West Virginia, steeped in traditional folk art. Several members of his family are self-taught artists, deeply involved in such crafts as wood carving and quilting. His formal art training includes stints at Yale, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard’s School of Architecture. Atticus has fond summer memories of screened-in porches back home and screen doors that practically dissolved the barrier between inside and outside, allowing the warmth and nature to permeate each day. This association continues to resonate in his art. “Metal mesh is a beautiful, flexible material that allows you to explore shadow and transparency in endless ways,” he says. “The material lends itself to these biomorphic shapes, which aren’t necessarily intentional . . . The sculptures seem fragile but are actually quite resilient—like nature itself.” A well-known sculptor, the organically inspired artworks of Atticus Adams are held in public and private collections and are exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States. Snakish (Curvy Abstract Minimalist Encaustic Wall Sculpture in Black and White)
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture in black and white "Snakish II", made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022 hand-stitched paper, beeswax (encaustic) and thread 36 x 10 x 3 inches hangs with a small thread notch on back extremely lightweight, weighs no more than 1.5 lbs. Excellent condition and ready to hang This abstract minimalist three-dimensional wall sculpture was made by Hudson Valley artist, Donise English, in 2022. The playful motif of hand-stitched paper, layered with black and white acrylic paint and coated with encaustic, is inspired by the artist's interest in architecture and blueprint drawings. The winding segments of white and black encaustic layered paper are assembled in a curving, snake-like formation, which are then hand-sewn by the artist. The lightweight wall sculpture hangs with a small thread notch, installed by the artist on the back of the piece. About the artist: Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her MFA from Bard College and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY.Donise English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention; and others. Artist Statement: I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.
