A beautiful 1950's French expressionist oil on canvas depicting flowers and fruits in a window by Philippe Marie René Picard. Bright and colourful still life on a good scale. Signed lower right. Artist: Philippe Marie René Picard (French, 1915-1997) Title: Flowers & Fruits in a Window Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 21 x 32 inches (54 x 82 cm) Philippe Marie René Picard was born in the small village of Neuvy-le-Roi in France. His parents were Albert Picard and Marie Lehoux; he had a total of six siblings. After studying at the Lycée Descartes in Tours, he entered the studio of the artist François Sicard. He was then accepted to the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Tours from 1932 to 1934, where he was a pupil of Maurice Mathurin. In 1935, he entered the School of Fine Arts in Paris, then in 1936-1938 the studio of Fernand Sabatté, and finally Charles-François-Prosper Guérin studio. Phillippe Marie exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants 1945, where the city of Paris bought the first painting. He then exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants until 1989. In 1946 when this painting was created, he exhibited for the first time in Stockholm. At the end of the same year, he was noticed by Youki Desnos and exhibit at the Fontan gallery in Paris. In 1947 and 1948, he participated in a group exhibition at the Marquié Gallery in New York under the title: School of Paris - Paintings with Eugène Boudin , Jean-Baptiste Corot , Braque , Andre Lhote , Élisée Maclet , Camille Pissarro and Henri Rousseau. He travelled to Sweden from October to November 1949. It will be his only trip abroad. Subsequently, he made several important exhibitions in Sweden. Hildegard Rath, (1909-1994) painter, author, teacher, and lecturer, Born in Wurttemberg, Germany, in the Black Forest region of Germany. Hildegard Rath became a painter of landscape, portraits, still lifes, and marine subjects and also a muralist. Her father was a bank president, her mother a sculptor, writer, and illustrator of children's books. He subsequently worked as a sign painter and a logger. Minewski first studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit (1936-1939) and received scholarships that allowed him to attend the Art Students League in New York City (1939-1942). There, he studied under artists including Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, George Grosz and Vaclav Vytlacil. During World War II, Minewski joined the army and fought as a combat engineer. Wounded in Burma while fighting with Merrill's Marauders, he spent two years there recovering from his wounds. Following his time in Burma, Minewski studied for two years on the G.I. Bill in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere (1950-1952) and, independently, with Hans Hofmann in New York City (1952-1953). Hofmann was influential on his style and his work shifted away from a moody realism towards a fuller expressionism. 1950s portrait, gouache on paper painting by Belgian artist Max Moreau (1902 - 1992). A finely detailed portrait of a lovely young girl looking like a good child from the period right after WWII. His mother was an embroiderer, and his father was a café musician. Gen-Paul began painting from a young age. An apprentice interior decorative artist, he looked about him in the wealthy apartments where his work took him and observed the pieces collected by art lovers, and he learned anatomy by getting to know surgeons and going with them into operating theatres. He also attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He painted on discarded cigar boxes using coloured supplements from L'Illustration as models. This was in 1913. At the outbreak of World War I he volunteered for service and was wounded; a year later a second wound led to the amputation of his right leg. Back in Paris in 1916, he began to paint. His first oil painting, the Moulin de la Galette seen from his window, dates from 1916. His early works are not easy to identify, as he painted many views of Paris to satisfy customers who wanted a painting 'in the style of so-and-so'. In 1918 he first signed a canvas Gen-Paul. In 1920 he showed work at the Salon d'Automne, remaining faithful to this institution and to the Salon des Indépendants. His first solo show took place in the Galerie Bing in 1926. He illustrated several of Céline's books, including Journey to the End of Night, Death on Tick ( Voyage au bout de la nuit, Mort à crédit) in 1942. He also produced engravings, some of which were published as a collection entitled Views of Montmartre ( Les vues de Montmartre). When World War II ended he travelled frequently to the USA and New York. In 1952 the Galerie Drouant-David in Paris put on a retrospective dedicated to him.
