As the result of his own experiences, training and life lived, comes out the art of Andres Nagel. Unclassifiable in a particular style, there are many who tried to tag his work as oneiric or surrealist. Even he has been labelled as a Pop artist, by the use of newspapers on his collages, like it happens on this print. According to Nagel, all these attempts of caging the artists are vane, as "even though art is being sold as if, it is not for mass consumerism". This is, the viewer must let go, think and open his or her mind to what is being seen, and mass culture is just the opposite of that. ABOUT THE ARTIST Andrés Nagel Tejada is a Spanish painter, sculptor and printmaker born in San Sebastian in 1947. Nagel completed his studies in architecture in 1972 in Pamplona. During this time as a student he began to work in engraving techniques. Since then he starts to travel to other European countries and the north of Africa. The Spanish scene at that time was dominated by abstraction and already had international recognition thanks to artists such as Chillida and Tapies, but Andres Nagel, who didn't feel identified with these trends did tune with the artistic movements that found in other countries such as Italy, Switzerland and Germany and soon opted for figurative art. A controversial artist, he rose to prominence with some of his works at the beginning of his career. In the mid 70's Nagel started to show his works in many exhibitions, both collectively and individually. Noteworthy among these events, his participation in the exhibition "New Spanish Painting" on Hastings Gallery in New York that introduced him to the American public. In 1978 also participates in a very important exhibition that pays tribute to the work of Joan Miró in Mallorca. During the 80's the artist works in numerous international exhibitions in cities like Varna, Dortmund, Bonn, Basel or Baghdad. In 1988 the Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao exhibits the graphic work of Nagel, in this show a catalogue raisonné is edited. In 1989 he began his collaboration with the gallery Tasende California and participates in many American art fairs. Thereafter Andrés Nagel travels the world and his work is present in several countries including Mexico, Japan, Singapore, China, France, Canada, Germany or Italy. In 2003 Nagel inaugurates in Amorebieta (Vizcaya) a bronze sculpture of eight meters high that he entitles "La patata" (the potato). Unparalleled defender of the intellectual property, the transfer of this work for urban reasons is considered by Nagel as an insult to his work, leading him to sue the city council. In 2009 re-litigated against a porcelain company that, according to the artist, plagiarizes his designs and get benefits from them without his consent. Andrés Nagel's architectural training is very present in all of his works. The way that this artist synthesizes forms and concepts leaves a statement of his beginnings. Tubes and other industrial materials are very present in many of Nagel's works and build up an essential part of the workshop process of this artist. She returned, with her daughter, to Hockney’s studio in 2014, not only to sit for him but to paint him once again. She is best known for large scale painting with a center focus often employing expansive circular images radiantly colored, radially composed. Cheng received her BFA in 1975 from the Rhode Island School of Design and attended the New York Studio School. Cheng has exhibited widely in the US and in Asia. In 2011, Cheng created Charting Sacred Territories, an exhibition exploring world religions which opened in the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA) , Taiwan (2011) and traveled to Hanart TZ Gallery in (2015), Shenzhen Art Museum, Shenzhen, China, (2015) and in Europe at the Palais Liechtenstein Feldkirch, Austria (2019). Cheng has had numerous solo shows in the US and in Asia and is represented by Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong. Emily Cheng (born in New York City, in 1953) is an American artist of Chinese ancestry. She is best known for large scale painting with a center focus often employing expansive circular images radiantly colored, radially composed. Cheng received her BFA in 1975 from the Rhode Island School of Design and attended the New York Studio School. Cheng has exhibited widely in the US and in Asia. In 2011, Cheng created Charting Sacred Territories, an exhibition exploring world religions which opened in the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei (MOCA) , Taiwan (2011) and traveled to Hanart TZ Gallery in (2015), Shenzhen Art Museum, Shenzhen, China, (2015) and in Europe at the Palais Liechtenstein Feldkirch, Austria (2019). Cheng has had numerous solo shows in the US and in Asia and is represented by Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong. In 2007, Timezone 8 published a monograph of Emily Cheng titled, Chasing Clouds, a decade of studies, with essays by Kevin Powers and Johnson Chang. Emily Cheng has lived and worked in New York City since 1977 and teaches Asian Art History at the School of Visual Arts. Influenced by a wide array of eastern and western artists including Van Gogh, Gauguin, Manet and Giacometti as well as de Kooning, early Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock. Nicolas Carone and Leland Bell were both among her teachers as well as Elaine de Kooning. SALE ONE WEEK ONLY Jennifer's "Untitled" piece appears to be a landscape with a colorful stripped form arising out of the grasses. It is an iconic image that she incorporates into her work. The following excerpt from her Artist Statement best describes her feeling about it: I stopped the slug imagery and started making purely abstract paintings. Eventually, abstract lines and forms evolved into “characters.” They lived in landscapes of a realistic sort. They were abstractions on a representational journey. It occurred to me that they were the slugs. I thought they had gone but they hadn’t. It occurred to me that they were the slugs. I thought they had gone but they hadn’t. They were the slugs transformed. Evolved slugs and broken out from their cocoons. They had become abstract “butterflies.” Jennifer Wynne Reeves was known for creating a body of paintings, drawings and photographs that speak to and confront formalist and humanist dilemmas. Beyond her achievements in the art world, Reeves enjoyed a considerable fan-base as a result of her astonishing Facebook presence where she chronicled and interwove her art and diaristic prose. Reeves solo exhibitions included Art & Public in Geneva, Gian Enzo Sperone in Rome; Max Protetch, Ramis Barquet and BravinLee programs, NYC. Reeves was also celebrated for her writing. She produced a graphic novel, The Anyway Ember and Soul Bolt, a book of images and prose. “Profoundly rewarding works” said LA Times writer, David Pagel, in a review her 2015 exhibition at CB1 Gallery. I wondered if I should stop making them? They were not beautiful. Nobody liked them. Nobody wanted to look at them. They were repellent and, worse, they were funny. I hated that. I wanted to be a “serious” artist. I was conflicted. I had to make the images that came to me but I was embarrassed. Maybe it wasn’t a fancy path but painting slugs was more honest than painting flowers (nothing against flower paintings, mind you). It came down to a moral choice. So, I determined to follow the slug road. Maybe it was a road that led somewhere? Or maybe not. After several years, I thought I hit a dead-end. I stopped the slug imagery and started making purely abstract paintings. Eventually, abstract lines and forms evolved into “characters.” They lived in landscapes of a realistic sort. They were abstractions on a representational journey. It occurred to me that they were the slugs. I thought they had gone but they hadn’t. It occurred to me that they were the slugs. Through this intervention, fragments of the past were introduced into the visual field of the present; long destroyed Jewish community life were visually simulated, momentarily recreated. The Writing on the Wall project was realized in Berlin’s former Jewish quarter, the Scheunenviertel, located in the Eastern part of the city, close to the Alexanderplatz. At the heart of Berlin, the Scheunenviertel was a center for eastern European Jewish immigrants from the turn of the century. The few historical photographs which remained after the Holocaust reflect the world of the Jewish working class rather than that of the more affluent and assimilated German Jews who lived mostly in the western part of the city.The juxtaposition between the projected images and the empty rooms reminds viewers of the fragility of memory, and how sites are activated/changed by presence and absence. P(art)ners demonstrates the Podestas' shared collecting vision and honors their participation in the inaugural TEDWomen conference in Washington D.C. The Podestas' collaborative collecting practice inspired the NMWA staff to hand them the curatorial reins for this exhibition. The two have articulated the themes for P(art)ners and selected the works. Images of the female body or allusions to it (such as seen in G-Force Dive, a witty sculpture by E.V.
