The Amber Hive

2016

About

"The Amber Hive" by Michael Rogers features a beehive (in this case a traditional skep), and mortar and pestle. All are cast glass and arranged on a custom made wood hive stand. A healthy hive is a magical place where the transformative work of bees takes place. Likewise a mortar and pestle is used to modify and prepare substances and is a symbol for the apothecary. 'The Amber Hive' represents health. "The Amber Hive" was currently included in a solo exhibition of Rogers' work at Exhibit A alongside "The Black Hive" and "The White Hive". This piece measures 56 x 19 x 19 inches. The hive portion measures 16 inches in diameter and is 19.5 inches tall. Michael Rogers earned a master of fine arts degree at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, he taught for 11 years in Japan at Aichi University’s glass department, and is currently professor in the glass program at The Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Crafts. Rogers’ work is included in several international collections, including the Suntory Museum in Japan and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY where two major pieces by Rogers are on view in the new Contemporary Art + Design Wing that recently opened in 2015.
