About the Item

Crafted wood sculpture with a mini diorama that can be seen through a viewfinder. Batteries included. More information below: MARGIE CRINER – ARTIST STATEMENT I remember spending time in my father's wood shop in the basement of our house, just outside Detroit. At about six years old, I made a walkie-talkie out of a block of pine, a nail, and some paint. It was my first unsupervised attempt at using my father’s tools. I was excited to use my imagination to build something three-dimensional that would function as a toy, on my own, from whatever I could find. My art is rooted in design mixed with play. I reexamine perspectives using color, form, narrative, and illusions. With a background in textiles, graphic design, and woodworking, my art combines a variety of materials. With shapes informed by architecture and geometry, my work invites the viewer to engage his or her own curiosity as conventional expectations are reshaped, distorted, or sometimes ignored. As I move toward completing a work, I often gain a better understanding in regards to some aspect of myself or the world around me. The finished piece becomes my teacher as themes revolve around childhood vacations, dreaming, and the banal moments in everyday life. MARGIE CRINER - - BIO Margie Criner is an American artist born in Detroit in 1968. Her sculptural work invites the viewer to examine form from a distance, then, via a lens portal, shift to see an interior narrative. Her work explores universal experiences like floating, waiting, commuting, traveling, and dreaming. She received a Bachelor of Science in Textile Design from Michigan State University in 1991 and has exhibited her work throughout the United States. Margie Criner currently works and resides in Chicago, Illinois.
