Academic Nude Sculptures

ACADEMIC STYLE

During the Renaissance, the first European fine art academies were established in Italy and would guide the style and standards of visual culture in the following centuries. Academic art became dominant across the continent in the 17th century, with artists coming together to offer instruction in this style of painting and sculpture

The academic art period represented a significant change from the previous era when painters, sculptors and other artists were part of guilds and seen more as artisans than purveyors of culture. While patronage from the elite and the church remained pivotal, young artists were able to support themselves for the first time through academic exhibitions and an independent marketplace. The leading academies included the French Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture founded in Paris in 1648 (which became the Académie des Beaux-Arts after the French Revolution) and the London Royal Academy of Arts formed in 1768 under the inaugural leadership of painter Joshua Reynolds

Academy students sketched drawings based on prints, sculptures and, finally, live models. Movements including neoclassicism and romanticism were particularly popular in these art schools and institutions where the influence of Raphael and Nicolas Poussin was prominent. Beaux Arts architecture and furniture design drew on these movements, too, and, as they also originated at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the disciplines share common ground with academic painting and sculpture.

Although academic art was a major shift for artistic status when it began, by the middle of the 19th century it was viewed as stodgy and resistant to new ideas, with the subject matter of artists such as William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jean-Léon Gérôme generally limited to allegorical or mythological themes. Impressionism, realism and the other movements that engaged with contemporary issues that followed were direct reactions to the academic tradition, although it continued to inform the avant-garde as artists like Gustav Klimt and Pablo Picasso started their practices as academic realists.

ORPHEUS Neoclassical White Marble Sculpture 19' Century
Located in Rome, IT
Unique Carrara white marble finely carved sculpture of Orpheus , Mythological personification of the eternal love and art. Henry Dasson French 1825 - 1896 Orpheus white marble, on a gilt bronze base 75.5cm., 29 3/4 in. overall The renowned Parisian maker of gilt-bronze mounted furniture, Henry Dasson, began his career as a bronze sculptor. Occasionally marbles with his signature have appeared on the art market. It is likely that these were made in his workshop at 106, rue Vielle du Temple, which specialised in the production of bronze artifacts and clocks. Dasson's success was such that he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1883 and was awarded the Grand Prix Artistique at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle. In the Greek myth Orpheus, son of the muse Calliope and Apollo – or of the king of Thrace, Eagro – is the poet par excellence, the personification of song. With his lyre and his words he manages to seduce men, animals of all species and even trees, stones and the sea. With the strength of his verses he moves, softens, excites, touches the soul and the fibers of those who have the opportunity to listen to him. Orpheus falls in love with the nymph Eurydice and marries her. Yet the fate of the two lovers...

NYDIA, THE BLIND FLOWER GIRL OF POMPEII Marble Sculpture 1856-1870
Located in Soquel, CA
Randolph John Rogers (American, 1825 - 1892) Randolph Rogers' Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii debuted in 1856 to critical and public acclaim, solidifying Rogers’ position as a pre-eminent American sculptor and it remains one of the artist’s most celebrated works today. The subject of Nydia is drawn from Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Last Days of Pompeii 1834. After touring the ruins of the ancient city in 1833, and inspired by the stories of blinding volcanic ash, he composed the tale of Nydia, a slave who led her master, Glaucus, to safety. Rogers depicts Nydia at the moment that she and Glaucus have become separated in their perilous journey through the rubble and Nydia seeks familiarity in the surrounding chaos, her distress evident in her pained expression. The grace of the sculpture is at odds with the turmoil portrayed; a toppled Corinthian capital lies at her feet and obstructs her next step, indicated by the tilt of her back foot and grip on her walking stick. Examples of this model can be found in major American collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Literature, Millard F Rogers, Jr. Randolph Rogers, American Sculptor in Rome. University of Massachusetts Press, 1971, American Figurative Sculpture in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1986. Joyce K Schiller. "Nydia, A Forgotten Icon of the Nineteenth Century." Bulletin of the Detroit Institute of Arts, Born in Waterloo, New York, Randolph John Rogers became an expatriate* sculptor of idealized figures, portraits, and commemorative works in Neo-Classical* and Realist* styles. He worked in clay, plaster, marble and bronze, and lived both in Italy and the United States. He made 167 examples of Nydia in two sizes (varies depending on base height) 36" and 54'. Rogers was raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as a young man did woodcuts* for the local newspaper, The Michigan Argus, and also worked as a baker's assistant and a dry goods clerk. In 1847, he moved to New York City, where he hoped to find work as an engraver*, but failing to do so, worked in a dry goods store owned by John Steward...

Monumental Classical Italian Venus de Milo Goddess Patinaed Bronze Statue
Located in Houston, TX
Monumental 19th century bronze figure of one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture, the Venus de Milo. The sculpture is finely cast and exhibits a beautiful brown patina overall. The "Fonderia Chiurazzi Napoli" embossed seal is visible at the base of the sculpture. Worship of Aphrodite continued throughout the Roman period. Known as Venus, she came to symbolize Rome's imperial power. Like her Greek counterpart Aphrodite, Venus was intimately associated with love and beauty, yet other elements were distinctive to the Roman goddess. Venus's first temples were erected in Rome during the 200s B.C. to solicit her assistance in battles, and individual leaders later allied themselves with the deity. Julius Caesar and his heir, Augustus, forged particularly explicit ties to Venus, claiming descent through her son, the Trojan hero Aeneas. The goddess was repeatedly represented in civic architecture and on coins, and her attractive figure became symbolic of Roman power throughout the empire. Artist Biography: In 1905, one of the best Neapolitan chasers of the time, Gennaro Chiurazzi, recalling his sculpture master Pietro Masulli praised him highly for the fact of being the first to have marked in Naples art a completely new path, opposite to the one of the Art Academies: an artistic manufacturing that could be applied also to the industry of the time, without the risk of becoming serial. The typology of product, unique and refined, to which Chiurazzi refers to, is the one that had already made him famous everywhere: bronze and life-size reproduction of classical and Renaissance sculptures. Each Chiurazzi manufacture was obtained thanks to the lost wax investment casting technique (realized on casts of Greek and Roman originals preserved at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, Musei Vaticani, Musei Capitolini and Museo Borghese in Rome, Palazzo Pitti, Galleria degli Uffizi and Museo Nazionale in Florence), refined then by the hands of a master chaser. The chance, unique in the history, to create casts from works of such important museums, gave the chance to the Chiurazzi Foundry to have a gallery of around 1.500 plaster casts of classical sculptures – from Doriforo to Discobolo, from Ercole Farnese to Laocoonte, from various Venuses to imperial statues, from Hellenic busts discovered in Ercolano to every kind of objects coming from Pompeii and so on –, Renaissance and modern (from Michelangelo’s Mosè to Cellini’s Perseo, from Bernini’s masterpieces to Canova’s). This fact gave the chance to the Neapolitan foundry to gain clients all over the world: not only reigning families in Europe and in the East, but also and especially tens of large Anglo-Saxon museums on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean that, to show classical beauty in all its perfect shapes and to revive the taste for the Ancient, do not hesitate to have Chiurazzi bronzes...
