For the past several years, Keira Norton has been making sculptures depicting human/animal hybrids. Keira Norton views each piece as part of a narrative drawn from the physical and metaphorical connections between particular types of animals and aspects of the human condition. The artist is currently combining the supple forms and playful gestures of dolphins and whales with seductively posed human figures to create a series of peculiar exhibitionists. Keira Norton intends them as somewhat humorous representations of the contradictory forces at play in conventional ideas about beauty and sexual attraction. Their ambiguous nature has allowed them to evolve over time from many sources, including folklore, popular culture, and art history. For example, the influences for a half-dolphin female character Keira Norton calls “La Encantada” includes tales of mermaids from the Amazon, classic pin-up girls, and the nudes of Ingres and Manet.
Artist Statement:
“Recently, I have been studying snub-nosed monkeys, and instead of focusing on their more obvious grotesqueness, have been inspired to capture their quiet watchfulness in small-scale portraits for the wall. Creating hybrids gives me the opportunity to be rigorous in my observations and playful in my interpretations. I am also continually inspired by my desire to mimic and invent forms and textures using the raw materials of clay and glaze.”

With increased focus on her art, along with winning numerous awards throughout high school, Newell eagerly enrolled in the arts program at University of Vermont and augmented her studies with a valuable year at the Cleveland Institute of Art. - Abyssal ShrinesBy Sarah Louise DaveyLocated in Philadelphia, PAThis is an original, unique ceramic sculpture by Sarah Louise Davey on a black wooden base. The piece measures 44” x 19” x 21”. Please note: This piece is pictured with the base on top of a black pedestal and a white pedestal. The black base of the sculpture is included, but the pedestals are not included. Artist Statement: "The art of making, for me, is very much a response to the human condition of needing to connect to one another, as well as to what lies just beyond the borders of our realities. I am drawn to the idea that art can have the ability to affect those who look upon it, allowing these portraits to be conduits to a realm within our subconscious. Although my females are hard ceramic sculptures, their hollow, eggshell-like interiors feel like a glove or a mask that can easily be slipped on and off, like the psychic armor of a distant self. An introspective dialogue is started as I make each piece, invoking a surreal understanding of the physical and emotional auras of these strange beauties. Heavy in symbolism, they illustrate the psychological scope of a hybrid creature. Their wide-eyed gazes are meant to portray an emotional duality that is constantly evolving. Some are alter egos of women on the verge...Category
