Tiffany Studios
The hand-crafted kerosene and early electric lighting fixtures created at Tiffany Studios now rank among the most coveted decorative objects in the world. Tiffany designs of any kind are emblematic of taste and craftsmanship, and Tiffany glass refers to far more than stained-glass windows and decorative glass objects. The iconic multimedia manufactory’s offerings include stained-glass floor lamps, chandeliers and enameled metal vases. The most recognizable and prized of its works are antique Tiffany Studios table lamps.
The name Tiffany generally prompts thoughts of two things: splendid gifts in robin’s-egg blue boxes and exquisite stained glass. In 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany founded the former — Tiffany & Co., one of America’s most prominent purveyors of luxury goods — while his son, Louis Comfort Tiffany, is responsible for exemplars of the latter.
Louis was undoubtedly the most influential and accomplished American decorative artist in the decades that spanned the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rather than join the family business, he studied painting with several teachers, notably the scenic painter Samuel Colman, while spending long periods touring Europe and North Africa. Though he painted his entire career, visits to continental churches sparked a passionate interest in stained glass. Tiffany began experimenting with the material and in 1875 opened a glass factory-cum-laboratory in Corona, Queens — the core of what eventually became Tiffany Studios.
In his glass designs, Tiffany embraced the emerging Art Nouveau movement and its sinuous, naturalistic forms and motifs. By 1902, along with glass, Tiffany was designing stained-glass lamps and chandeliers as well as enameled metal vases, boxes and bowls, and items such as desk sets and candlesticks. Today such pieces epitomize the rich aesthetics of their era.
The lion’s share of credit for Tiffany Studios table lamps and other fixtures has gone to Louis. However, it was actually Clara Driscoll (1861–1944), an Ohio native and head of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department for 17 years, who was the genius behind the Tiffany lamps that are most avidly sought by today’s collectors. A permanent gallery of Tiffany lamps at the New-York Historical Society celebrates the anonymous women behind the desirable fixtures.

They were immediately successful when they were exhibited in the Sevres pavilion at the 1900 Exhibition. Individual figures could be ordered and "La Cothurne" proved the most popular. Their success led to the firm of Susse buying the right to cast versions in metal. Agathon Leonard (1841-1923) is one of the well-known French Art Nouveau sculptors. Born in Lille in 1841, he first studied there before moving to Paris where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Eugene Delaplanche. He gained recognition at the annual Expositiones Universelles, winning a Silver Medal there in 1889 and gold in 1900. His most important piece, Jeu L'echarpe, was the best known series of Sevres production at the turn of the century and sold out at the 1900 Expo in Paris and later was given as a gift by the French Gov't to Nicholas II at the Hermitage. His bronzes were cast at the Susse Freres Editeurs Foundry. He worked also in marble, quartz and ivory. He also produced Art Nouveau medallions...Category

Price Upon Request - Mounted AmazonBy Franz von StuckLocated in Chicago, ILFRANZ VON STUCK (German, 1863-1928) There is a tension between the Apollonian and Dionysian in Stuck’s work. Nietzsche’s contemporary and a kindred spirit, Stuck valiantly searched for a way out of nihilism- beyond Good and Evil- by seeking to expose the psychological underpinnings of morality. He mined the depths of the subconscious and challenged long-held beliefs. With comprehensive inquiries into Franz von Stuck’s art such as the 1995 retrospective exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the 2013 exhibition held at Seattle’s Frye Art Museum, a once grossly overlooked artist is emerging from the shadows. The breadth of his influence on modern art is dazzling. Like many talented young art students, Stuck was plucked by Gerlach & Schenk publishers in Vienna to contribute illustrations for Allegories und Embleme and other publications beginning in 1878 for which he continued until 1888. He officially debuted as a painter in 1889 in Munich at the Artist Association where he was awarded a gold medal. Growing success in the next several years at exhibitions throughout Germany led to State-commissioned work and by age 30, Stuck had become a full professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. That same year, 1893, Stuck organized the first exhibition of the Munich Secession. Driving this avant-garde group was an anti-nationalist undercurrent which instead favored pluralism. This showed in a willingness to collaborate with artists from all places, an openness to varieties of styles and multi-disciplinary thought as well as a de-emphasis placed on any distinction made between the so-called high and applied arts. A shaper of these tenets, Stuck’s belief in the “total work of art” concept -or gesamtkunstwerk- was beautifully demonstrated in his Munich Villa Stuck...Category
