About the Item
73” x 40” x 2” variable dimensions (resin, metal)
In Philip Simmons' series of sculpture made of resin, metal, and vinyl, he references pop sources and the news media to comment on American culture. One of the themes that unifies this work is a nostalgia for a mythic golden age in American society that was created on television and in the movies. In this media landscape, cowboys and astronauts occupy the same cultural space. Some of these pieces start with an iconic images Simmons finds on the internet. These images are then re-imagined in contoured lines, often combining opposing imagery.
In this wall hung sculpture, Philip Simmon's creates a dialog between the two forms: one of a hunter, the other of a winged figure, in relief cut out from the forms of two beasts of prey. A predator bird and a panther figure lock gazes, set in deep blue and black poured resin. The high gloss reflects the atmosphere of the room, giving many layers of meaning to this work, which is finely executed.
