Neil Clifford often combines bronze castings with granite or other materials to create natural, archetypal images – appearing both timeless and precious. Clifford was awarded a Canada Council Grant (1990) to study the lively arts in Indonesia, and graduated with honours from the Ontario College of Art’s sculpture program (1994), winning 3 of the College’s highest awards. His work has been collected in Canada, the US, England, and Asia.
This bronze owl is captured in the middle of navigating a smooth landing into the bough of a tree - it's seeming weightlessness is a testament to Neil Clifford's keen observation of and integration with the natural environment. Clifford's art reflects his deep appreciation of nature and his desire to engage the viewer with powerful visual and tactile forms. Neil’s understanding and use of natural stones combined with manufactured materials, the intimate relationship between the process of finding forms in nature and creating bronze sculptures for them, and the continuity from the concept stage to the final presentation define his studio and work today.
