ROSES DELICIOUS sculpture by Melanie Newcombe Aluminum window screen, aluminum wire, wood, paint 19" x 17" x 7" inch 2018 * * * Melanie Newcombe * * * * * Artist Statement * * I am perpetually pushing materials toward innovative structures, with my figurative work featuring layers of aluminum screen wire sewn into human forms. The repetitive lines of the stitching connect a patchwork of wire mesh, arranged to convey a tension among beauty, sensuality and ephemerality. I see the layers of metal and wood as symbolic for how we as humans are also layers. Like onions we are layers. Like the wire mesh, we are layers. The layers are a metaphor for me of our own layered lives. I created the figures after reading The Odyssey and The Iliad. I was particularly interested in the relationship between the gods and humans. And in growing up in a family of mostly women, I understand the story of women. My sculptures are goddesses, balancing between the sea, the sky, the earth and the human. They are each a self-portrait, but also a universal portrait of a messenger / a mother / a maker. A departure from realism, my most recent abstract pieces are an explorative dance between me and material. These pieces for me are more about process than product because I am letting go of the trying and allowing the material to just move with me as I create out of my intuition. Water is a pervasive theme in my work as well. I grew up in Minnesota on lakes and rivers and have spent my adult life near the ocean. I am transfixed by the qualities of water, and to my imagination, my sculptures have the transcendent ability to appear as water — sometimes solid, sometimes translucent, but always reflective.
